Stayed at the best western and enjoyed the narrated tour. Very educational, great experience. Love the radio that you can carry to listen to, and can get more information if you desire. The tour guides at each station were also very informative.
Sainte Mrie Among the Hurons is a reconstructed French Jusuit Mission that was constructed between 1639 and 1649. The site is the context for telling the story of the contact between the French Jesuit Missonaries and the Wendat people. THe visitor begins their journey with a slide show that outlines the history of that sotry. The visitor then prroceeds onto the grounds of the reconstructed mission and complets the journey with the opportunity to explore an very interesting museum. There are often costumed interpreters in vvarious buildings to share the story of the site and answer visitor questions. If you are a history buff, you may wish to make sure to save some time to visit the museum as you can use a lot of time to visit the site and then not have much left for the museum. You can, however, take a break at the restaurant which is quite delightful and then complete your tour. The feeling you get when you visit the longhouse when the fire is burning is quite remarkable. IIf an interpreter is present, they might share a legend or two. The First Light event before Christmas is first class and totally magical. You will want to bundle up warmly but the music and anbience of the entire site iis truly remarkable. This is definitely a site that you will want to vvisit when you are in the Midland area. You may wish to top off a visiti by going to the look out looking over the Wye River and Georgian Bay at the Shrine across the highway but you may wish to make that a visit all on its own on another day.. It is spectacular. There is a special story to tell here about the early history of French contact with the Wendat people. That story is thought provoking and you will be touched in some way through your experience at this site. Enjoy.
This attraction has a lot of history and artifacts. The staff at both locations are very knowledgeable on history and the contents within the museums.Would like to go back and spend more time there.
A wonderful place to spend the best part of a day. Local history comes to life with a tour of the site and the history of church, native relationships is visible, memorable.and interesting. Professionally presented ,educational and a beautiful setting for a family adventure. The Sainte-Marie restaurant is an added treat with atmosphere and good food.
Always enjoy a visit to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons - so much to see and do. Interpreters are very knowledgeable. Grandchildren enjoyed their visit , especially hands on events - candle making, baking, using quill pens, etc. First Light is a must see - beautiful event with vendors, music, fires, theatre, so many candles lighting your way throughout the grounds. Always take away new information. Will continue to visit .A fine attraction for our area.
Took our grand daughter for the afternoon and she fed the wild birds right out of her hand! She was so excited! Wonderful nature displays and knowledgeable staff.
A great place to visit. A lesson in history for the family while having fun. Lots to see and learn! Many displays and areas to explore. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day, or just a few hours. Wear comfy shoes as there will be quite a bit of walking.
First Light is an amazing community event in an historic setting which is a dazzling experience with the thousands of candles lit to celebrate the start of the holiday season. Family friendly and very pleasant for all ages. It can get very busy so arriving at the first part of the evening when it opens is recommended. There are many activities to take part in, music to listen to and artisanal wares to browse through. The cost is very affordable and food is also collected for the local food bank. It was an enchanting evening thanks to many volunteers!
We have been to Sainte Marie many times but this was the first time for the First Light event. There were a lot of people there but the staff and volunteers did a great job organizing everything from the parking to the crafts to the food and drinks. We were glad we visited. So lovely to see the site lit up by candles and lanterns.
I love history so getting to First Light this year was a priority for our family. Our whole family had a great time! My 4 year old daughter loved all the craft stops where she could put her creativity to use. My 2 year old loved the music, the blacksmiths and the musket firing display. My wife loved the beauty of the setting and the candle-lit paths. I loved stepping back in time and having an authentic 17th century experience where my family wouldn't be bored. Cannot recommend it enough!
It is interesting to know about life of first immigrants in Canada! I liked it! I little bit long but still good.
Even in the rain we had a wonderful time. Lots to see and learn about and the presentations were informative and interesting.
This Historical Center is worth every cent. Make sure you have lots of time to take it all in. This is history that I have never seen in our schools. The tour starts with a movie background of what you are about to see. With a hand held personal guide and a route clearly umbered one wends ones way through a past we can't even imagine. Although the original buildings no longer exist the recreation feels authentic. We were much surprised at the "hands on" of this attraction, no where is there a sign that says do not touch. Because of the staging ( fires) one gets a real feel for what it must have been like to live in the longhouse. No wonder people did not live long. Well worth a day if one adds the museum which is included in the price.
good place to stop and stretch your legs.peaceful nature trails, authentic village features buildings (and tools) that the early North American settlers would have used
had people dressed in period clothing explaining their roll in the settlement, the villiage is a replica of the original which is really well done and interesting
