There are some interesting wines and wineries in Prince Edward County. The challenge (and it is the same here) is choosing wines that taste great and have a semblance of value.Lots of wineries here have a base pinot noir and a higher grade pinot noir. The base offering tends to run between 19 and 25$, while the better stuff is in the $35-$39 range. Here is no different. There base pinot is 22$ and their better offering (Diana Block Pinot) is $35.Unlike some offerings at other wineries, the difference here is pronounced. The $22 bottle is forgettable (and not cheap enough to be an any night of the week wine), yet the $35 is quite good. Far better to go with the $35 special occasion bottle. The drive and parking area is a bit tight, yet the building and grounds are nice with plenty of room inside for a group tasting. Service here is sufficient and appreciative of customers.
As one of the oldest and largest wineries in the county at 60 acres under vine, the Grange boasts an impressive profile of wines all made from their own estate (Unlike many others) Their prices for wine are affordable to the masses and picnic lunches are always a great touch when you have one of the most picturesque wineries in the region. I'd recommend having a picnic, taking a tour and enjoying some all county wines while you're visiting the area. Say hi to Monica, Brandon, Maggie or even Caroline (if you're lucky, she's a busy woman) behind the bar.To all you nay-sayers, I don't know what your problems were but maybe you need to relax a little more and enjoy the island time feel of the county. Lata Mon!
No doubting the pedigree (all estate grown) and quality (solid northern European varietal wines) of Grange's wines - and they have a certain Reputation - but we were somewhat disappointed with the ambiance and (lack of) enthusiasm / knowledge of our pourer host, who seemed to be pre-occupied yet had little else to do. I mean we had travelled literally thousands of miles and consciously selected just a few PEC wineries to discover and report back on, yet this didn't seem to stir him / them from casual insouciance. I'm sure it's not a general theme here - after all good reviews are the norm - but this is what we felt. The whole visit lasted about 15 minutes in the end - Maybe it was a given that we wouldn't be repeat customers; therefore Not Worthy !
We went with a group of 40 people to this winery today. It was pre-planned and they were ready for us. Maggie was an informative and fun tour guide and showed us everything at the winery. We got a real behind the scenes view. Our package included a lovely lunch of salad and quiche or sandwich and a tasty dessert. The best of all was that we came home with a free bottle of wine and all the other ones we bought! You gotta go here.
We met friends for a picnic and wine on Sat. Sept. 27. Restaurant service was pleasant. However, the sandwiches were dry and tasteless. The wine was hardly drinkable and everything was very overpriced....
Pros: Great atmosphere in an old barn. Nice scenery. Wine is great (we bought a case last year).Cons: -We went for lunch, but most of the food was sold out by 1230. We bought the last few remaining sandwhiches. -You must buy 6 bottles to get your tasting free, ink me most wineries that give them after 1 or 2 bottles.
Had the opportunity to enjoy the wine and hospitality of Grange Winery last week. Great wine, amazing location, wonderful picnic. If you havent had the chance to go to Prince Edward County and enjoy the wine tours, its a must!
Came back for a second try. The setting is still beautiful, the wine tasting area also wonderful. The service at the bar far better then 2 years ago. And their chardonnay outstanding. This time a bought a couple bottles of wine. Whereas last time I left empty handed. So all and all great improvement in product and service.
Begin the visit by driving along vines full of fruit. A short walk around the building took us to the tasting room. After a few samples, while looking out over their beautiful property, we made our selections and purchases. Sadly, we had had breakfast not long before, so we did not get to sample the picnic lunch option. The choices were interesting, and you can add a bottle of wine to your basket, grab a blanket and head off on their property to have lunch. The property has a small creek with a waterfall, a banquet hall with enough character for some wonderful wedding pictures. It would be especially beautiful in full fall colours. We took a couple of pictures of grapes on the vine and then happened upon the very friendly owner. Definitely a place to return to!
Went with my family for a quick tasting and really enjoyed our experience. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the wine we sampled was great... And it was very kid - friendly.
Great service , a good selection of wine I would recommend this visit to anyone We will be returning here in the near future , with our friends I would have liked the Pinot Gris , but it was sold out.
Wonderful winery. Very friendly and knowledgable staff and lovely wines. If you are there around lunchtime the give their picnic basket a try.
Best Riesling we had on our tour: Estate Off-Dry Riesling. Highly recommended! Beautiful setting also.
Beautiful location, great wine! Great descriptions for the tastings, include this in your wine tour!
This is a lovely winery, the setting is beautiful, the barn converted into the wine tasting bar is stunning, the wine is reasonably priced compared to many wineries in the area and the whites are really good!
