We cycled to the park, noted there are public toilets, and walked to the point. To doze off in the sunshine while seeing the cranes of Roberts Bank in the far distance is a peak moment in life. All the while tide currents rip past the tiny gap in the rocks.
Watching boats, kayaks and canoes shooting the roaring rip always interesting, excellent boat moorage good walking trails, high grass being cut not a huge priority for Parks Canada. July 1st lamb bbq a great time but cash only event.
This little spot can be accessed by foot (about a 4-5km hike from 'downtown' Saturna), bike or car. It has a lovely picnic spot with tables and seating and looks across the cove. There is a short walking trail beyond the picnic ground and this trail takes you to a terrific spot over looking the narrow gap where the tide enters and leaves the cove. To see the water rushing out as the tide leaves is fascinating and if you are there when a small boat or kayak negotiates this gap it adds to the visit. This is a place of lovely views, a place to relax or do a gentle walk and generally be at peace with nature. We enjoyed watching the geese as they shepherded their little goslings around the shores of the cove. Well worth seeing.
My wife and I cycled to the park (which has biffies) and walked the beach to the point, returning by the trails, in love with Saturna, in love with the water`s edge paradise at Winter Cove. At the point we watched the tide sneaking through the thirty foot gap to the next island... then watched it turn... and become a mighty stream in the other direction, like the racing tide you see from the BC Ferry going through Active Pass. Except this time it;s just you and your sweetheart who are there to admire. We lay in the sun in tall grass and wildflowers, just feet away from the drop off to the ocean, admiring the view which included eagles, Roberts Bank some dozen miles away, and freighters. We drifted off to sleep, feeling safe and at peace, surrounded by beauty.
