A great place to discover, quite, on the side of the water. Go for a nice pic nic or simply to get out and walk or even to read a book under a tree listening to the water waves, all this a couple of minutes of the island of Montreal.

The Refuge Faunique Marguerite D'Youville truly is a refuge, for both animals and visitors alike. Located in Chateauguay, just a 25 minute drive outside of downtown Montreal, it is a perfect place for a picnic, daytrip, wildlife photography, or just to escape city life. Entry cost us only $2.30 each with the 2 for 1 coupon found here: http://www.bonjourquebec.com/qc-en/attractions-directory/municipal-and-regional-park-nature-interpretation-centre/ile-saint-bernard-refuge-faunique-marguerite-dyouville_187878022.html but is usually about 4$ each. The scenery is mostly marshes, swamps, and some beautiful wooded paths between them. We saw deer, heron, ducks, birds, and many frogs. I loved that the trails were so quiet - just the sounds of the wind in the marshes and occasionally the birds. We seldom crossed paths with other visitors, but it WAS a cloudy day and we went later around 4 pm.Pick up a map at the entrance/ticket booth to plan your walk as there are different routes to take. Along the way there are several picnic tables and rest stops with benches to sit and reflect. Food is also available at the entrance at the bistro or café. Also If you have time, take a look at the tower built on the nun's property right next to the refuge - it is one of the oldest in North America, built in 1688!

Keep in mind that the scenery isn't mind blowing. However it's a peaceful place to spend up to half a day (was just there this morning). We did most of the perimeter and the first part (left hand side) is mostly shaded (bring insect repellent during the summer), while the second half is mostly in the sun. It's quiet, not very crowded (at least not in the mornings) and we saw turtles, ducks, egrets, a heron, hundreds or thousands of frogs, deer, Canada geese, an amazingly large dragon fly, and some butterflies. There's even 2 clean outhouses along the path and the chalet at the start has food and spacious facilities. MY husband goes more often for nature photography. Entrance is $4.
