We did end up buying something, so obviously we liked the work. Very nice work with interior and exterior applications. Handrails and gates were simple to ornate. Lots of tables, shelves and wall decorations. There are some other artists' items displayed. There is a nice small museum at the site that is interesting. We didn't spend the time to view the video. There was an English version. Easy to get to from Quebec. This seemed to be a fairly unique place.
We were amazed by the quality of not only the iron work (beautiful serving dishes, lamps, gates; but also the ceramics displayed with it. Downstairs is the actual forge, and we were able to meet the artist Guy Bell who was very gracious.
We custom ordered a king bed frame from this fantastic artist back in 2000. The bed has been nothing but unbelievable. It has truly been a piece of furniture that we will cherish and pass down to our children. When we visited the forge we saw work he had done for a gate for a beautiful estate. We adapted that design into our headboard and footboard. Quality beyond belief.
This is an amazing place to visit one of the few working forges in Canada. It is a small museum, but it definitely gave us a good appreciation of the complexity of this art form. We were also lucky to be able to see one of the artisans at work on a beautiful gate. The woman at the cash in the store was very knowledgeable and answered many of our questions, even providing us with a mini-tour of the place. Definitely, worth a visit!
We visited this interesting blacksmithing demonstration shop, small museum and shop (known as an economusee). An economusee is a business whose products are made using traditional methods and is open to the public. At this particular place you could see Guy Bel and his apprentices working on actual wrought iron pieces through a glass observation window. There was also a short movie (10 minutes) you could watch (both French and English) where the traditional methods were demonstrated and discussed. Then you could view old blacksmithing tools, example pieces, etc. On the second level there is a boutique showing more extensive pieces by Guy that could be purchased. It was an interesting stop that we made during a visit to the Île d’Orléans. PIck up a map at the Île d’Orléans visitor center located just over the bridge so you can find this place. The map has numbers on it that correspond with attractions signs to stop at along the road that circles the island.
