Bluff, the most southern town in the mainland of NZ, because of its size, has limited attractions for visitors. Well, it doesn’t mean that these are unattractive, one of them is really good to be visited. The Bluff Hill lookout is a good highest point to see the attractiveness of Bluff area below. It has a stunning panoramic view 360 degree, which the prominent land marks, such as : Tiwai Aluminium Plant to the north east, Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island to the south, and Bluff town and its port at the north positions. It can be reached by car to the top by following the roads from town centre, or through walking track from Stirling Point. A stunning view at the sunset or sunrise.
If you've made the trip to Bluff, a visit up the hill is essential. Incredible 360 degree views and a great spot for some photographs.
the steep road to the summit of Bluff Hill is well worth the journey. the well placed information panels on the spiral wheelchair friend walkway, ensures the 2mins walk to the observation point is a memorable one. The 360degrees views of the Southern/Pacfic Ocean, Bluff Harbour and the Southland Plains is breath-taking - even of a cloudy day.
Wow what a view. 360 degrees of unobstructed scenery. It was blowing a gale and we could hardly stand up,but I suspect that is pretty much what you get in Bluff. Awesome view out to Stewart Island. Great place to tick off your bucket list, beautiful Invercargill a short drive away.
Freezing day and hard to stay out of the car, but I could still just glimpse Stewart Island. The view off toward Invercargill was pretty spectacular as well. It's well worth driving up the hill.
The view from the top of Bluff Hill are amazing. You get an unobstructed view of the various islands around Bluff.
There are two ways to get to the viewing platform at the top of the hill, the easy way is by car although you could always bike up and that will certainly challenge even the best of you.The other is to walk using one of the coastal tracks through native bush with the opportunity to see a wide variety of NZ birdlife or if you are lucky you might even see a pilot whale, seals or something bigger$ when walking the coastal section of the track. The road to the top starts off with a relatively nice gradient and gets more challenging as you get further up. The last section before the lookout is very steep so select a low gear early. Make sure everything is secure in the camper or you could end up having things to pick up.The view from the top is well worth the effort on a nice day, there are great panoramic views from the Catlins, Stewart Island and many other offshore islets to the west where Fiordland begins. The Takitimu Mountain range stops you seeing as far as Te Anau (2 hours drive away) and the Eyre Mountains stop you seeing as far as Queenstown. All in all a great spot to watch the sun come up or go down if the weather permits.
Very picturesque but the locals don't even like it. Just about everybody I spoke to talked the town down. The Government official were (supposedly) strangling the fishing industry, people were moving out...etc, etc...etc. What i found was a lovely place an well worth the trip from Invergaill. If you want to survive do it from a positive position not one from Doom and Gloom....you don't deserve it......
Nice view from the top. There are very little people on the trails even in the middle of the season, so it's a soothing solitude experience.
Located near Invercargill in South Island of New Zealand, the countryside route with hills and dales to Bluff is as beautiful as the destination itself. Bluff is a must-visit - a walk along the bush gives you the experience of twittering birds or a climb to the lookout with the wind blowing you away offers a panoramic view of Hawke's Bay, marine liners, overhanging cliffs and bluish ocean.... and not to miss the heavenly rainbow! Don't forget to dig into the hugely popular and succulent Bluff oysters in the quaint little cafes there.
Cold, windy but the sun was shining. Some great walks around Bluff Hill, and right at the top is the lookout - wow the view is really breathtaking
360 degree views from up here. A bit of information on some signs about NZ. A map names all the islands you can see (if it's a clear day)
Driving up the very steep road I was wondering if it was worth it...until we got to the top and the views were definitely worth it. It is still a bit of a drive from Invercargill but if you are in the area it's worth a visit. I have to say I was not too keen on seeing the industry on one side but I presume it's necessary for the people who live there. It can be very windy and cold at the top!
Always well worth the drive up Bluff Hill to see the awesome scenery. We were blessed with great weather the day we went up recently.
Walked all the way up the hill and it' was pure magic with nature all along. Take a good warm jacket as it kind of gets cold toward the evening before sunset. A rather good walking pair of shoes will be needed as well. Fantastic view of Bluff Town and Stewart Island from the very top.
