Gables was open to look through, grounds in a great state and a sunny warm afternoon of food and wine amongst the trees. Very sheltered and friendly atmosphere.Great to see in the old hospital.
We attended a wedding ceremony in the garden outside The Gables. It was the perfect spot and we couldn't have been more impressed.
Suce a lovely well cared for old building, housing art from local artists. So lovely to get to look at the art as well as the building. Gardens outside are well kepts and quite lovely. Then an easy walk to the chineese gardens and brookland zoo.
There are three reasons to visit this tranquil spot. The heritage period gardens maintained by the N.P.parks staff, the very special original 1840s wooden building and three exhibition rooms of art open each weekend or by arrangement.(I must admit I am a member of the art society whose members exhibit there.) The buildings alone warrant a visit.By NZ standards this ex colonial hospital is precious and if you take the time to read some of the historical admission returns there is a treasure trove taking you back 175yrs.
The Gables is the only survivor of New Zealands first hospitals established around New Zealand in the 1840s. It is currently home to an art society and is open to view at the weekends, where you can walk around the historic building and take in its interesting history. Set amongst the lovely gardens of Pukekura Park, it is well worth a visit.
