Did the tour after the salmon and honey tasting. It is a great place to stroll around. You are given fish food so you get to see the salmon close up there is also a waterfall cascade there which is really pretty. We bought salmon and the paste which was delicious
Salmon is my favourite food, so seeing it was on our way from Launceston Airport to Gawler we called in. It feels like quite a drive from the main road but worth the few extra minutes to get there. They have a tour which we didn't get to do. Now I went in to buy the salmon, with no interest in the Ginseng. We left with hot smoked salmon, so moist and delicious, the rillette was more than I expected, delici I us spread on toast under scrambled eggs. We also tasted the Ginseng Spice and Ginseng Honey. I honestly didn't expect the flavours what a wonderful surprise. Looks like I will be ordering them online if my fishmonger can't supply me with them.
Hello Valeria L,Thank you for your review of our farm. We appreciate you took the time to review the farm and we take on board your comments. We are very sorry to hear that you did not feel welcome and that the staff were not hospitable. It really makes us sad that people assume we overcharge just to make money or rip them off. We do it because we have to or our business would not survive. We take into account our costs and a fair margin on top to end up with our prices. As a small family business, to keep up and running we need to charge an entry fee for our self guided tour. As you chose not do the walk, (it is an optional payment) you may not have noticed all of the work that goes into building and maintaining an establishment that is open to the public. We also do not have enough staff to offer everyone a guide. We are open 7 days a week and have 5 staff who share all the jobs from service to maintenance, processing, cleaning, bookkeeping, sales, admin, cooking etc You may not realise that Australia has very high labour costs and a lot of red tape, costs to run a small business is sometimes not even worth it.Public liability, insurances, wages all come into effect. When compared to other businesses, we believe that $10 per adult or $25 for a family, is a reasonable value proposition for people to potentially spend anywhere up to or over than an hour of their time walking around. The reason we stop people when wandering off towards the ponds is because we often have people who just keep wandering and do the walk for free, even after we have put signs up. The place not being good for children is an opinion that you can have but we have lots of families with kids who come here, even school groups, who have a fantastic time. In regards to the product, hot smoked salmon is a slightly different process to cold smoked salmon. In our opinion not an easier process than cold smoked as there is a bit more to it with brining and temperature control. Also there is no natural (wild) salmon in Australia, it is all farmed and if you compare the price to our fish to supermarket hot smoked salmon you will find it is on pare in price, also comparing with cold smoked it can be cheaper, but I have spoken earlier about our pricing. To compare sizes of international salmon farms we grow 7-10 tonnes a year. They can grow up to 450,000 tonnes a year. This can explain somewhat why our costs are higher. Economies of scale come into play here. If you had of brought up these things with us on the day we would have done our best to explain it all to you in person. Kind Regards
We had a quick drive by as we had been recommended by some of the locals. Ziggy the owner is one easy going, sociable , electrician turned business owner/salmon guru. He is one step ahead of everyone in the farming world. This man is one ECO friendly , greenie genius. His whole farm runs on solar power, the pumps, fishes live and grow based on the most logical thing, the normal circle of life. Therefore leaving his fishes to taste so delicious as there are no antibiotics or hormones placed into the fishes. We didn't have a chance to walk around and take a tour but what we gauged in our 20 mins of chatting while grabbing lunch seemed so impressive. He also owns his mini waterfall at the back of the farm. I want his life.
Thank you for your review of our farm and apologies that it did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately we do not have enough staff, especially in the summer, to have people outside on the farm to interact with people more as they do the self guided tour. We run with 5 staff and we have to stretch them between shop, kitchen, office, processing and maintenance. On a busy day we spread ourselves thinly. We will take into consideration that you said that we need a clean up and will endeavour to get out into the wetlands and clear the willows and do some more landscaping when we can get there.
Really good thing to do with kids. They can go feed the fish and you can have a coffee and bite to eat. The salmon is magnificent so we bought some for lunch to take with us.
This is one of my favourite places, it is a piece of paradise. The walk around this farm is so calming and peaceful. You can feed the Salmon as you walk around. They offer tastings of the yummy food, We had lunch in the cafe sitting outside, as you would imagine Salmon is on the menu in various ways, There are 3 very friendly dogs, that match the very friendly staff.
Fantastic hot smoked salmon and salmon rillettes. Great food for a picnic. Very pleasant staff too. Highly recommend it.
Hello Fay,Thank you for your review on our business and sorry that you did not have a great experience when you came back to visit again. We always ask customers if they have been before to the shop as most return customers know what they are after and don't want to go through the whole spiel and tasting again. I am sorry the person that served you did not offer you a refresher tasting as most of our staff do and you are always welcome to come back and taste as many times as you like. In regards to the size of the tasting we try to give people enough to have a small sample but we cant be too generous as we go through thousands of dollars of tasting each year. Also apologies if you were felt like you were "watched like a hawk", we try to be available for the customer and keep an eye on them to possible help out if they have any questions. A lot of our products are a bit different to the norm so we usually get lots of questions. The staff member you had that day may have been a bit overzealous. Hopefully we will see you back one day.
We are big fans of salmon and had read plenty about this place, so we made a stop here the first day flying into Launceston. The self-guided tour seemed fair, but we skipped this given we didn't have much time, and went straight to the cafe for tastings. The staff are very friendly and generous with the tasting portions. The smoked salmon was so delicious we ordered a platter to share after the tasting and bought more to take home with us. The packaging is very travel-friendly, though we do recommend that travelers who plan to bring some salmon back home to share with family and friends to pack a cooler bag with them, so they don't have to worry about their salmon going bad if you are driving around Tassie like us.
We spent about 2 hrs here just a great place to stop. We sampled the salmon products and had a lovely walk around the farm and fed the fish, we came back to the shop had something to eat a coffee and a great chat with the owner, he was very welcoming knowledgeable and passionate. All the things we purchased were great and will defiantly will purchasing online
We came here for lunch at the cafe. we decided not to pay the fees and get into the farm. We did a tasting with the owner. A very knowledgeable man. The salmon is amazing!! The food was well priced. they even cater for Gluten intolerant. the lovely stop along the way to cradle mountain.
I took my 4 year old to have some fun 1 day and stopped by the Salmon farm. He had a delight feeding the fish, watching them jump out to catch the food.We walked through the wetlands saw how the farmer makes hydro power.Lots of information that one can learn to in creating a green environment. The only down side is the concrete tanks that they raise the salman in.
We did not pay the fees to get in the farm. Along our route to Cradle mountain, we saw the Salmon farm sign and decided to stop. The brief talk and sample testing from the owner were convincing enough to make us buy heaps products. We ordered salmon plates and enjoyed it very much. I forgot the dog's name but he was also friendly and came to guests to say hello.
We enjoyed visiting this place because you can wander around the farm. My 2 young kids loves feeding the salmon and the dogs are friendly. Take sometime to walk to a small falls. A little surprise for us. The sandwiches taste yummy.
