Apart from the word "platypus" on the axemen hall of fame sign, and the giant platypus out the back, we found next to nothing about a platypus and had effectively no experience. If they at least advertised tours, it might help.
Your hosts, Peter and Wendy, will ensure your visit to the Platypus Experience and the Axeman's Hall of Fame is one to remember whilst in Tassie. Marvel at the amazing platypus, abundant in the nearby Mersey River plus the view the displays that depict the sporting history of Tasmanian axemen over the years. The building itself is well worth visiting.
At first I was a little disappointed, as I thought it would be some sort of aquarium where you could view the platypus' up close. when we arrived, we found out it was an actual tour. We were only in town for the 1 night and were able to book onto the evening tour at short notice. It was a very reasonable price at only $10pp and the money goes back into the program to create better environment for the local platypus' . The guide, Ron, was a very dedicated man and was able to point out about 5 different platypus in the river which we were able to watch for a couple of hours while he answered our questions. He then proceeded to show us the parkland they created out of an old quarry/dump and they have transformed it into a sanctuary for local platypus'. This is a must do and is a great cause to support. Thanks Ron.
We did the morning tour in Latrobe and it was absolutely amazing. As soon as we walked out of the car, the guide pointed at a couple of platypuses near us. Amazing! If you want to see a platypus, definitely take this tour. The 10$ per person is more than worth it, and goes to the maintenance of the area. You can do either an evening or a morning tour and you'll go with your own car, meeting the guide at the visitor's centre. Really worth it!
We booked a 7am tour for the Platypus Experience, through the visitor centre at the Axeman Hall of Fame. Our guide was Ron, he was brilliant! So passionate and does a great job as a guide and also with the work he does at La Trobe Landcare. We saw heaps of platypuses, some swimming down the river, others foraging for food on the banks. We got plenty of photos of them too! Great morning out, would highly recommend this tour!!!
For the first time since being in Tasmania I was terribly disappointed. The expected Platypus Experience - wasn't!! No live platypus. We weren't interested in the Axeman's Hall of Fame so we were somewhat disappointed with it all. The signage to this attraction was poor. We certainly saw the signage for the Axeman Hall of Fame but the Platypus and Trout Experience was so tiny we missed it the first time we drove past! However, as we were there on a Sunday there was their regular Craft Market with some fantastic stalls of goods to be viewed and bought. In particular, I love the Toll Craft (3D) pictures made by an expat NZ'er. There were stunning and we bought one!I guess if you have no expectations of seeing live platypus but happy to wander and view other stuff then this place might appeal to you. However, I think next time we want to take our visitors to experience platypus then we will just have to travel a bit further and go to the Platypus House over at Beauty Point.
After visiting the lovely shops in Latrobe and checking out the antiques and the amazing Relequaire full of collectable dolls, bears, antiques and toys, we enjoyed a short drive to look at the platypus ponds. There were none in sight while we were there but we will go back another day as the natural bush setting is a lovely spot for a picnic and I am still looking foward to seeing a platypus there. Strangely enough I did see a platypus in the creek that runs under the main road in Latrobe near the shops!
It is utterly disappointing that it's called the platypus experience and there are none except fake ones and still it's pretty tacky ,the axmens part is ok but the cafe is redicuiolisly over priced and slow service
The "Platypus Experience" - incorporating the "Trout Experience" and the Australian Axeman's hall of Fame - is a complete waste of time and money unless you have a great interest in Axemen. The Platypus Experience does have the requisite Aussie "Big Thing" - in this case a Platypus - outside. But I wouldn't go any further than that. Go for a walk by the river, which is tranquil and pretty, and more likely to have a Platypus in it.My main problem with the "Experience" is that it lacks *actual live Platypuses* - it has some wall displays about the Platypus, a set of water tanks with some plastic and stuffed animals and fish to simulate their natural environment. (These fish are Trout, so making up the "Trout Experience"). But no Platypus. Something they don't mention at any point. The display might well suit a museum, but falls far short of expectations. There is also a hall featuring Wall displays of Axemen past and present, some Horseracing memorabilia and a gift shop. But unless you have a keen interest in those it's not very interesting. At $12 entry it's not going to hurt anyone's pockets (unless you fork out for a soon to be disappointed family), but for $18 you can can go to the vastly superior Platypus House, which has live animals and knowledgeable keepers.
