Run entirely by volunteers, this large museum offers an insight into the farming and social history of Millthorpe. There is an extensive range of old farming equipment coupled with documentation and video displays to show you how it was all used.In addition there is a blacksmith shop, a craft shop and buildings storing school memorabilia, relics and history from the wars. ancient household appliances etc. etc.Great place to take children to give them a glimpse of what life used to be like. Allow plenty of time because I'll guarantee you won't want to leave. Unfortunately only open at weekends.
This museum is cheap to visit but packed with heaps of memorabilia. The technology shed alone is worth the visit. Take your time roaming around and if you want to stop for a break, walk out and walk back in when you're ready to resume!
I was so impressed with this small museum. Not only does it represent all facets of Millthorpe's past with well displayed items, but it also contains expertly documented information which is easy for family historians to access and research. Many of the displays are set out as rooms in a home, the articles which are displayed have their sources acknowledged, and are very representative of their era. Much care has been taken to choose items worthy of display, there is no clutter, and each piece is well labelled. Showcases of memorabilia are beautifully selected and displayed, and there is ample space to walk around and view each display. The early Aboriginal history has been carefully researched and the story told, with items displayed to emphasise the story. This is such an inclusive museum, it tells the story of a small town and its people in such a wonderful way. It truly is a credit to all those who volunteer their time and expertise. Congratulations!
We stayed at historic Millthorpe, a gem between Orange and Bathurst, NSW. This gorgeous historic town was a delight to visit with charming stores, lots of old fashioned verandahs and country cottage gardens brim full with spring blooms. Millthorpe Museum has been open since 1965 and hosts a large collection (the largest I've seen) of farm equipment and machinery. There is also a Craft Cottage and educational videos for all to watch. This Museum should not be missed if visiting the area - it's a gem in the crown of historic Millthorpe. There is a small fee on entrance but well worth it. Restroom facilities are spotless.
From the street it is a bit hard to know what to expect of the museum, but there is a sure to be something that interests most people spread over several different buildings on the site. I particularly enjoyed looking around the shed at the back which has an incredible collection of old farm machinery. Well worth the entry price.
Fabulous and well documented artifacts from early life in Millthorpe and surrounds. Well kept by a wonderful team of volunteers
A great display, from front yard, through all the different buildings and outside displays. trouble is we could remember alot of the stuff on display from when we were kids. Not a place to miss. You could spent a couple of ours there.
So golden memories live up to its name. My parents we are now getting on to elderly (don't tell them that!) went around the place saying "Oh I had one of those when I was a child" "do you remember that" As a younger person (well middle aged really) I also found the it fascinating. It was one of the best community museum's I've ever been to. The collection was vast and well laid out with great explainations. The volunteers were also very helpful and the products for sale in the craft section were fabulous. I could not recommend this place more especially if you have an interest in agricultural or social history. Well done Millthorpe. Oh and there are lots of BIG toys for the boys.
