Not too bad an experience, above ground and underground tour. Mildly pricey at $32 per adult.Tour went for about 1 hour 15 mins, majority of it was spent underground, which was interesting. Surrounding area appeared to have more ruins and part of an old smelter, this was not included in the tour at all which was a bit disappointing.Glad went, but it could be better and is starting to look a little run down. Its about 30kms out of town with about half the drive on dirt ( passable in a two wheel drive and not too bumpy ), allow at least 35mins to get there. You have to pass through two farm gates to get there, as long as there not padlocked, open them and go through, closing behind of course. Tours were at 1000am and 1130am. (january 15)We saw some feral goats and a fox on the drive to the mine :)
Have done a couple of mine tours but none led by a more laid-back laconic person than this one at Day Dream mine. Very informative and full of anecdotes of 19th century mining life this tour is well worth doing.
The tour was a great to have an in insight into what it would have been like to be a silver miner. The stories abut the working conditions and life expectancies of the miners (many of whom were children) were horrifying. It is such a great experience to go underground to see how a mine worked. The tour guide was great, combining lots of information with humour and great stories The tour is about 45 minutes long which was a great length. The drive was further out from Broken Hill than we realised as it is quite a way off the road so take that into account when planning the trip.
This was something out of the ordinary, totally worth the visit & very interesting as how the mine use to operate a very long time ago. It is sad to hear that children had to work and live like this to keep food on the table for their family.
The day dream mine tour was just too good to get a good insight of how life was for the miners back in the day. I have to admit that I am slightly claustrophobic but I survived and our guide was good too, kept a regular check on me. It was good to see/experience how confined the space was, learn about talking toms, see mannequin of a kid working and experience working in candle light and complete darkness. The temperature down there is 20deg, I took a jumper just in case but did not need it. Also once you turn off towards the mine, it is 13kms of dirt road so allow that time if you don't have a SUV (we didn't and had to drive real slow)The tour is worth $30 bucks and is well worth it. The only advice I would give is that when you sign up for the tour and pay for it, you are asked about scone and tea after the tour. Just remember its not included in the $30 for the tour. We thought it was, so will pay to check that before you order. Overall a must visit if you are in Broken Hill or Silverton.
After driving along the dirt road for 5 or 6 kms and passing though one gate, found the second gate padlocked. A sign on the road would should have been in place to indicate it was closed. Passed two other cars and told them it was closed so it wasn't just me
When you learn how those late 19th century miners were lucky to live past 30, had to sleep sitting up so they didn't choke on the blood they habitually coughed up, and took opium as the only way to escape the slog and sickness, you'll be mighty glad to be alive now. This is a fascinating, quirky and thought-provoking step back in time and highly recommended for anyone of reasonable level of fitness and an inquiring mind (and without a fear of dark, enclosed spaces!). Our guide Jeremy was a fount of knowledge regarding the history and workings of this, the only mine in the Broken Hill area that the public can visit. There is a surface-only version of the tour, but you really have to head below ground to get any idea of what it was like to work here. Don your hard hat and head torch and down you scramble. You'll learn the techniques the miners used, and shake your head where the young boys used to pick out ore by hand (better eyesight than the older miners) and experience the candle light (and then total blackness) that the miners worked by.
Loved the explanations, the history, the actual descent into the mine, and even the memory of that first rush of claustrophobia that thankfully passed. So glad I went to just get a tiny fragment of what it must have felt like to go every day to work there for a wage.
Our family really enjoyed the mine tour. The tour went for about an hour both on the surface and underground. Our guide Jason was great. Very knowledgeable about the mine and the industry and great with both the adults and the children. My boys aged 13 and 10 thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The drive in on the dirt road would be easily managed by any car and was very smooth.
We visited during what should have been the open times. Signs on main road said "open". Drove the 6 or 7km on dirt road to first gate - open. Drove another few km on rough road to second gate - padlocked! Annoying when signs say open and it is quite a long way to the mine only for it to be shut!
This is an amazing mine very informative do both the above and underground tours. The road in is about 12km of dirt road in good condition did it in mitsubishi magna no proplems
Did this tour with the suggestion of my wife and I am glad we did (after the disappointment of the Mad Max 2 museum deciding to close for the day we were there). It was a good decision as this part of history should be essential to anyone that visits this area can not be under estimated. The lady guide gave a real incite into the mine, how it was set up, and how it operated. Her patience with some of the people in our group was "above average". The tour underground was something we don't generally get the opportunity to do, so added to the day (and my disappointment of the other Silverton attraction)
A really enjoyable experience. Kevin and Beth I believe own the lease on the property and are your hosts. $30 for adults, $10 for school kids was reasonable BUT the $4 surcharge for paying by visa IS in violation of their merchant services agreement..our total bill before the charge was $92) .. And the $4 in cash please.Apart from that the experience was fantastic... A must for all families. The road to the site is a graded track - quite rutted in places.... Glad we have a 4wd ... Although there were a few 2wd in the car park
With the Delprats tour being no longer available, we decided to do a tour of the Daydream mine. You don't go down very far, but that's probably a good thing as the steps are steep and uneven, and can be tricky to navigate.Kevin aka Boss, was very patient, and never rushed anyone along and he was full of information. It was amazing and sometimes a bit horrifying to see the conditions that they had to work in back in those days and the dangers they faced. The above ground tour was great as well. All in all, a good tour to do. Just be warned, the dirt road leading to the mine is in mostly good condition, and the sign at the entrance says it's a 15min drive, but probably more closer to 25-30mins, depending on your car.
I did not go down the mine this time as the knees are not great but to scramble down a mouse hole to work is how i would put it. I went down the mine on my last visit with a friend who was scared of confined places but by forcing herself to do this, she overcame her fear. Difficult but rewarding. The mine is 13 kms off the Silverton road, and you can just wander around the workings. As a bonus the devonshire teas are great
