Had a great time at this basic but welcoming caravan park. Washing machines and clothes line were good. There was also a great little playground. Bring your coins as its a coin op shower. Our kids had a ball riding around. Managers are real gems.
For those who like a Diamond in the rough this is the town for you. With it's small population this town has more character than most of the big cities. From a house made from beer bottles, mine tours to underground accommodation which is 1st class. Everyone in the town you speak to has a yarn to tell and so do the passes through as most people have been on outback track to get to there. This is a town that has been around since the 1890's and has only been on the national power grid since 1990's and town water not long before. If you like a town spirit this is the place for you
White Cliffs is a mini Lightning Ridge. This quiet laid back town is a short drive on sealed roads from Wilcannia on the Darling River. At first you may think the town is deserted but soon you find that most of the activity is underground. We stayed at the caravan park and found reasonable prices with well maintained facilities. We chose to park up and walk around the town. This was great way to see and appreciate the White Cliffs lifestyle. We left White Cliffs knowing we will return one day.
The digging on the open field are really strange and it would be quite easy to slip or all into one of the shafts. It is still possible to fossick. The White Cliffs under grown motel is unique, the rooms like quite large and comfortable in an old-fashioned way but unfortunately there are no emn-suites. We did not feel claustrophobic just looking around - see only spent a few minutes inside. There are a couple of shops selling opals but I think Jack Absalom at his gallery in Broken Hill has a much larger collection. However, it is a very long drive - 3 hours each way from Broken Hill and there is no much of interest along the way.
We stopped off at White Cliffs on our way round NSW. It was very hot, dry and dusty but the people there were amazing. We didn't stay at the caravan park we had a room at the pub...White Cliffs Hotel Motel. Double bed, clean linen and great shower. This was the smalllest pub we have ever been to but it exploded with personality. Alot of the houses there are underground to avoid the heat of Summer. When we pulled up I was like aarrgghh but after just 1 night there will definately go back :) :)
