A well laid out Museum about the Mining in Gympie. Very interesting, lovely old relics from the mine itself and the people and lives associated with the area around the mine, some of the items on the wall of the school and hospital are very interesting well worth a visit. The information and pictures about life during this time is an interesting read. Andrew Fisher's house, was very intresting and well laid out, appeared very small for a family to live. A good afternoon visit. 10$AUD per person was well spent.
This is one of the best country museums in Queensland, if not the best. It covers a wide range of topics associated with Gympie, from the gold mines, through the dairy period and to now. It covers education, health, communications and social areas, all set out in genuine historical buildings, the main building being a water tank from the mining area. Every building covers a specific area of Gympie's history. On some days, the steam winding and crushing engines are running. After a leisurely stroll through the well kept grounds, wonderful meals and snacks are available from the kiosk
This was a very interesting place..explained alot of history in timber. Was cheap to get into aswell. Great collection of machinery.
the food was ewwww yucky and the staff didn't really care to attend to those in the cafe. It took forever to receive a coffee that couldn't be drunk.... we will never go back to eat or drink anything from this cafe.
An interesting look into the past of Australia, not just gold mining but other relevant tit-bits of information including an old school, Andrew Fisher's residence (Australian PM), a replica of the Gympie Fire Station and Ambulance Shed and many other interesting artefacts. An old railroad station is also on site and there is an abundance of old equipment and machinery for you to explore. A little disjointed with no map or guide, but overall a good couple of hours. Take a camera.
We spent an afternoon with Alan who could be a descendent of The infamous James Nash! He is a wonderful character and showed us patiently how to correctly pan for gold. He must've done a good job because we both found nuggets worth more than the entry fee! Fascinating place. Well worth a visit
All round excellent place to take the kids the relatives from interstate and the food is absoultly amazing. Will defintly be back again
Sorry, been trying to review the pond and walkways for weeks, not able to find the spot. So writing it up here. Haven't been in to the museum yet but walking around the pond almost everyday. What a privelledge. Must stop for people travelling through, stretch the legs, use toilets , walk the dog (and kids) and all in one go. One of my favourite spots in OZ. Also been to markets and bought fresh fruit and veggies this past Sunday and great price. The rest is basically everyone's secondhands and some crafty ladies around. The market stall with the 'bikies' at the back were great though, good variety of product.
I took my 6yr old to see the museum, lots to see & kept him interested for a couple if hours. He especially loved the gold chips he found when panning in the tubs! The guides were very knowledgeable & friendly. We will go back for another visit.
Excellent place for all ages. Scout collection was excellent. They have just added another building to their collection.
This place is a bit of a treasure, much better than you might expect for a small town museum. The range of material is absolutely vast and it needs to be a bit better curated, really. The upside is that you can get up close and personal with the exhibits to a far greater extent than would usually be the case.We recommend this place. You think it will take an hour but it takes two and you are aware that if you know a bit more about some of the classes of exhibits it could take four or more.
There's a lot to see, and do (gold panning) in this lovely open air museum. In places it's bit mixed up, or feels a bit oppressive, as heaps of 'stuff' have been crammed in.Run entirely by volunteers you have to be impressed by their efforts and the $10 entry is way to cheap for what is an interesting morning or afternoon stroll around times gone bye.Make the effort and learn something about yesteryear
Always something new to see. If you like learning about the olden days, here is the place to go. Lovely park to picnic in and good coffee shop to buy lunch if necessary. Check out the schoolroom and find out the rules and regulations back then. You'll never complain again. Walk out along the gantry and get an excellent view of the whole area, including an understanding of what Gympie means when they say "Flood". You can even try your hand at gold panning if you wish. All up, a great experience.
Tried out cafe which is in a fabulous spot overlooking park and small lake but staff were downright rude. Ordered fish and chips (waited 35 min) and a hamburger with cheese (came 10 min later) no cheese, dry and barely no salad so couldn't eat it. Sad as we were looking at a new lunch stop on trips to Brisbane. MUSEUM was interesting and for $10 entry a good way to kill an hour. Society needs to unclutter it and give more information. Looks like exhibits haven't been touched in years. Check when markets are on as they have some activities which would make it more interesting.
This place is amazing. We were on our way back from Tin Can Bay and our son saw the sign and asked if we could go. It cost $25 for our family of 5,which we thought was reasonable. The whole museum was fantastic. The displays are clearly labeled and well spaced out. With approx 30 different buildings to look in each with plenty to see we spent about 3 1/2 hours here. So you can see the entrance fee was great value. This place should be on your to do list if you are in that area. We all enjoyed our time there especially the gold pan-ing at the end. The staff were very friendly and the cafe had a great menu and lots of cold drinks. One thing to note, they are cash only - no eftpos.
