marysville trout and salmon ponds

We were almost denied admission into the farm by a very gruff old gentleman manning the entrance. We were charged $35 entrance fee (which I think was fair and actually low for our numbers). However, as I was paying fee, the eleven year old daughter of my friend commented "Oh this is too much (it wasn't in rude tune). This absolutely set off the old gentleman off. Go away I am up since 5 to put up with this #$#@ and then muttered abuses $#@ .I was completely petrified. All this in the presence of four kids. I told the gentleman to ignore the comments she is only eleven. But he kept repeating go away. As I do not want the long drive back to Melbourne with very upset kids, I kept my calm and eventually we were let in. I complained to the other staff who were supportive and I must add that they were helpful and courteous. Farm is bit run down. However, kids did catch fish so in the end they were happy. This would be my first and last trip to this venue.

Brought my 13 month old son, my wife and a few friends along with expectations of some easy and fun fishing. We arrived at 11:30AM on a fairly warm and sunny day. The property is beautiful - many ponds to choose from with differing levels of difficulty and plenty of BBQ's around to use. We stayed for 3 hours and took home 3 fish (which was our target) we also enjoyed a bbq lunch and watched about 4 different groups of people/families successfully get fish from the same small pond that we were fishing in - taking home catches of between 4-6 fish. The fishing slowed down at midday when the weather was really heating up.The eldery couple managing the farm were as described here in tripadvisor - a very lovely and helpful (if not forgetful) elderly woman and a grumpy (but dedicated and helpful) eldery man. At times it was hard for us (and other customers) to locate one or the other as it's a large property and they can't man the front desk all the time given the duties they need to undertake so my tip is to just call the landline (which will divert to their mobile phones) if you find you need some attendance. The old man gave us the best advice when we arrived about which ponds we should attempt first and also offered to take us to an easy pond if we're having trouble getting any fish. Some tips:1) Bring along some pliers to remove the hook from the fish's mouth - that'll save time from having to run around looking for the staff. From what we saw, trout are bleeders, so try to minimise ripping hooks out of their mouths :) A number of times our hooks got lodged down the throat of the fish so the hooks had to be removed during cleaning.2) Fill your bucket with water BEFORE you put the fish in - better than having a bucket of dead fish with flies buzzing around them.3) If there's not too many people around and you want to increase your chances - take two rods from the rod area.4) If you can't get any fish within 20 mins try another pond - the small ones on the right hand side of the property and behind the office are easier to fish. If still no luck - let the owners know and they can restock one of the ponds for you. As we were leaving they were restocking the pond that we were sitting at which was running pretty dry after about ~15 trout were fished by other happy visitors.I'd happy recommend this location - just don't expect 5 star customer service. It's very much country hospitality - bring your smile and patience along and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Visited the trout farm in early August. Arrived at around 11am. Was nice and quiet. The elderly manager explained where we could fish. He advised the top ponds would be easier to catch fish in. Took my 2 young boys to the top pond and baited up. Within seconds of the first line going in a trout was hooked. Next line in and a fish was on. Decided to try another pond to prolong the fishing experience. Kids wanted another catch and were successful at the first pond.Had a picnic at at the BBQ area. Bbqs are rusty due to the rainy climate. Tables and chairs aren't the cleanest due to being exposed to the elements. The property is picturesque and kept clean.The owner/manager cleaned the fish for us and advised where we could buy ice. He was courteous and never had a problem. Was a good experience for the kids. They were really excited after catching their first fish after having been on several unsuccessful fishing trips. I would recommend it for a day trip out in the scenic area of Marysville. There's a great park at the oval in Marysville where the kids tryout various contraptions.

We visited this trout farms 3 times. The first time was 6 years ago I went there with my in laws in a raining day so couldn't enjoy much. We played a while in the deepest pond and unfortunately got my hook stuck to the bottom of the pond and had to have the line cut - the boy (maybe the owner's soon) turned to me with an unhappy face. Second time happened a year later when I visited it again with a couple of friends. There was a "hungry fish" pond which you could easily get one fish in a second - so we was happy about the fish. Got out no problem. Third time we visited again recently. The place looked nicer but the owner seems to be ruder. It seemed that they didn't use the word "please" or know how to talk to you using a complete sentence. Unfortunately one of the guy had problem with the roller of the rod which broke down and when we came back they boy was angry and asked if we did something stupid to to rod - what the "f..." you did with this?... We decided never to come back.

Wonderful to be able to catch your lunch. You know it's fresh. Children rate it as one of their best days.

Friendly, beautiful, easy. Great for kids and beginner fishermen.Jenny took loads of time to teach us how and has a wicked sense of humour.

Beautiful surrounds and a great, wholesome day of catching fish with my Dad and my son. A little patience is required with the elderly owners, who've had to come out of retirement to manage the farm after some personal tragedies and the devastation of the area during the bush fires.

We went to the Trout and Salmon farm this long weekend. The other reviewers are spot on - this business should not be managed by this man. He is awful with a terrible attitude and zero customer service skills. We did not meet the lady.We paid our entry fee and the man showed us where we could fish. He told us of the 4 ponds, I casually enquired as to where I might catch a Salmon but was told 'I already said we are only running these 4 ponds'. So Salmon was off the menu - which was what I went for anyway.The fish were the only good thing about it - they tasted lovely.So, suffice to say I wont be returning and would recommend any or all other farms in this vicinity.

We visited this trout farm on 12th May 2014, a day after Mothers' Day in a group of 7. Contrary to the experiences of previous reviewers, we had a memorable experience on this farm. The lady boss (Jenny) was a sweet old lady who gave good advice on how to best position the bait, and which ponds to fish in for a likelier catch. Though age was catching up, she stayed with some of us in the cold and helped w our fishing. She kindly offered that we would stay on the property and continue fishing although it was closing time, as we didn't catch any fishes. She led us to a "special" pond where we managed to get catches really rapidly. We went home with 3 fresh and extremely delicious trouts which we thoroughly enjoyed for dinner. She also gave my sister & I 2 porcelain figurines as a small token to to remember this place. The lady boss later shared that hard times have fallen on her and her husband as they've lost a dear family member who was going to take over the business. That may probably explain the "rude" and "unpleasant" experience that previous reviewers may have encountered. However, we urge that you give place a try and you may be pleasantly surprised as we've been. Thank you Jenny for making our trip so memorable. =)

We were looking forward to a lovely outing on our best family holiday ever!Excited we entered the trout farm to be barely acknowledged by the old man running the trout farm. The staff member was rude telling us to 'wait until he was ready to deal with us'. Whilst we waited our inquisitive 3 year old wanted to see the ponds and walked though past the paying area, at which the rude arrogant proprietor angrily berated them. He was asking us for exact change in a surly manner. But we don't want to judge because we don't know his story. We assume he is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, after having returned from Afghanistan or Iraq. Or may be suffering from testicular cancer. So we don't judge.

My wife and I will never return to this place again. The owner/manager is extremely rude and very grumpy. Do not waste your money going here. Go to the Buxton one instead. The staff are fantastic. Very friendly and could not help you enough.

We visited this trout farm on Australia Day 2014 with our two young children. The day started off fine and our kids were enjoying themselves but after an ugly and unprovoked incident in the afternoon with an aggressive and rude member of staff we have vowed NEVER to return. As my husband and son were trying to unhook a fish, it flipped out of his hands and swam away. (We knew the rules – you don’t catch and release – but it was totally accidental. We already had six fish in buckets so it was never our intention to let a fish go.) Shortly afterwards a male member of staff approached us very aggressively and yelled at us to get our belongs and “get off my ****ing property or I’ll call the police”. No discussion. No quiet word with the parents. No hesitation about using bad language around young kids at a ‘family friendly tourist attraction’. We were absolutely stunned and shocked by the manner in which this staff member dealt with the situation. We offered to pay for the fish but he made it very clear he didn’t want our money and repeated that we needed to “get off my ****ing property”. He snatched another fish from my daughter and then ‘escorted’ (followed) us around the property, repeatedly shouting at us and sharing some very ugly views that I'm choosing not to repeat and threatening that he would “come to our house and steal all our belongings”. How do you explain an adult’s behaviour like this to a 6yo? Someone who holds views such as those shouldn’t be working at a tourist attraction!There is a huge disparity between how this place describes itself on its website and the actual experience. They say it’s “great fun for all the family” and they’re “committed to providing you with a special and safe place” and that “it is surely one of the most memorable moments in your life….”. Our visit on Australia Day was NOT fun, nor special. And we most certainly did NOT feel safe when confronted by this staff member. It was certainly memorable but for all the wrong reasons. We will NEVER return and we hope you’ll take our experience into account when deciding if this is the type of place you’d like to visit. Next time we’ll go 5 minutes further on to Buxton Trout and Fish Farm which gets rave reviews.

Catching fish isn't as easy as fishing from a bath tub. We moved around different ponds until we came to the "easy pond". There was one point when I wondered if there were any fish at all but the operator came along and flung some fish feed into the pond and up hopped numerous trout! The fish were sneaky and my bait would disappear without the fish getting hooked but I can hardly blame that on the operators of the fish farm! Besides, when we'd been there a while, George (the operator) came out w a different type of bait for us and even checked on my equipment and replaced my hook. I think if we didn't catch fish, we could have asked George to catch it for us (which I saw he did for others). However, we did catch the fish and they seasoned and wrapped it in foil for us to steam BBQ on site (in an open but sheltered area). George even came around to show us how to debone it efficiently once it was cooked. The fish was delicious! Overall, the experience was fun.

We were in the area and weren't sure whether to go to the buxton or marysville trout farm. We ended up going to marysville. Entry was $5 for adults which included fishing rod, bucket, bait etc. we started out in the challenging pond and stayed there for about 45 min and caught nothing. Saw a few trout in the water but for some reason they weren't biting! Then we went to the easy pond and stayed there for half an hour and still caught nothing. Can't believe we couldn't catch a fish at a trout farm! Have caught fish off jetties before! The man there wasn't very friendly. He seemed completely over it. Environment was lovely but disappointed that we caught nothing. Luckily I had brought lunch! I was planning on eating the trout we caught as lunch but that didn't happen. Perhaps the fish weren't hungry ... ?

Trout farm situated in very pleasant surroundings on the outskirts of Marysville. Catch a feed or just watch others fishing. Picnic facilaties availble. Gear for hire and you can have your fish cleaned and filleted for a reasonable charge.Have a chat with the owners and hear the stories of how they have fallen on hard times during recent times.
