The noise the birds make as they return home is amazing. It was really lovely to see them all cover the trees, wires everything...and how they just vanish. Quite a sight...and a noise. We stayed close by so saw then every evening. Try and be around to see them at roosting time in the evening. There were stalls and carts 2mins away where we had some totally yum local food.
A little after 5 pm, thousands of canary-winged parakeets begin coming in from the jungle to roost for the night. The chatter reaches a crescendo and ends by 6 pm. Almost as interesting is the crowd of tourists and locals who come to the park to watch.
Be there around 17h to see the thousands of parakeets (Brotogeris versicolurus) arriving. The sight and noise is impressive. And while you are waiting for them you can use the free wifi :) Sometimes it is possible to climb the curch tower for a small fee to get a better look.
Thousands of parrots come home to roost every day at dusk, and you won't believe the noise they make.
This is a pretty standard park, nothing special to it. Just simply go at Sunset and enjoy the show from 5:30 - 6:00. Its lovely. No need to go any other time.
It uses to be a really great spectacle to see the parrots coming in the afternoon to the middle square. Right now the smell is just impossible, is a torture to have to pass by. The smell doesn't come from the parrots though.
Those birds.. it is something to see with your eyes, hear, be there! photos/videos we took cannot describe it. 5 - 5:30 local time, be there!
If you love birds and want to see a large gathering of small parrots coming home from a day out in the jungle searching for food this is the place to be at sunset (5:30 pm). Thousands of small parrots come home to sleep in this park. It is very loud and impressive to see them coming home in swarms. There is a small cafe in the park and some street vendors that sell food. There are some fountains a small bridge over a pond with some large lily pads and a nice jungle gym there. You can also walk across the street to the left at the end of the soccer court to the back side of the library and catch a beautiful sunset from a high vantage point overlooking the local market and port area.
At about 5 or 5:30 tons of birds arrive at the park to find a tree to sleep. It is incredible to hear their noises and see them arrive all together.... while you seat there and drink a glass of lemonade.
It´s Marvellous to go and listen that big Crowd of Parrots leaving in the early morning and arriving on the sunset to their trees!!!! Also visit Banco de la República which is for free and a very important guidence and knowledge about the different comunities!
10 mins before sunset I was thinking the experience was over-stated with a few hundred birds at best. But they kept coming and coming until 10,000 was easily believable. Fun - too loud to talk to each other, kids enjoyed the 'playground', good street ice cream.
Its a nice park with birds all-over the place, especially in the evening when the small parrots come back
