a great trip in summer or winter. Great views of the region and a very cheap ticket. About $10. The lift is fast and you can spend about an hour up top enjoying the views and a cafe
Cerro Otto has lovely views reached by a cable car. Cost was 180 pesos (official rate 8.7p/US$1). Cerro Capinario has a slightly better view for about 160 pesos with a chairlift. I loved both. Cerro Otto has a revolving restaurant with pretty good food. It also had reproduction of Michaelangelos David etc! More fun were the trails in the area. Some were fairly easy though still required walking down/up a number of stairs, and others more moderately strenuous. The relatively easy trails had lovely orange flowers but I turned back after 30 minutes because there were no signs to the view point. There are clean bathrooms both at the top and bottom of the cable car facilities. Bring 2 pesos for the attendant and your own toilet paper just in case. Stores sell water. Hat, water, good walking shoes, sunscreen, light jacket or long sleeves in case windy up on the mountain or if the weather changes. Can catch the Santa Fe # 20 bus (need to buy a bus card; add enough pesos for the bus trips, was 6 or 12 pesos each way) or an express bus from Cerro Otto's kiosk downtown that might be included in the price of your ticket. Expect long lines in the middle of summer. I had to wait about 30 minutes to get n the cable car. Was worth it.Can catch reasonably priced taxi too (about 35 p?)Can spend 1 hour or half a day there. I was there about 3 hours. Very few english speakers when I visited. Good to know Spanish of course. Though people are nice and will assist you if needed. Leave 10% tip at restaurants.
Great place to visit to enjoy the views of the beautiful lake but get ready to get very filthy. The dust there makes you come back pretty dirty. It all worth it, though!
Took the cable car up the mountain. Overlooks the entire area. Great sights and cable car was fun. At the top are several walking trails up and around the mountain top. Some can be challenging. Walking around the building though will allow 360 degree sights. Can get a bit windy up there so be ready. When the wind blows it gets much cooler even on a pleasant day. Lastly, they have the only rotating restaurant in Argentina. We sat and had a drink while enjoying the vistas as we slowly went round!
On the top of the Cerro Otto you will find a nice rotating restaurant with a really great view of the whole valley! You just need to sit, relax, and wait for the rotating restaurant to turn to get a view from another angle. From the top you can also do a small trekking to a close viewpoint, if you prefer to see the view without the windows. The way up in a cable car is also interesting.
We wandered over here begrudgingly on our last day in Argentina. I had some weird aversion to going since everyone said it was the thing to do in Bariloche. But it was super cool. We did a little hike to a nearby peak (like half a mile). It was good to work off the hot chocolate and croissants I scarfed down (that were awesome ) in the rotating café. Cool and random art exhibit with a full size replica of David there. Highly recommend it!
No lines. Cable car up and down was litke a sauna. Glass was somewhat distorted/scratched so not terribly good for taking pictures. Views were very good. Hiking available to upland forest. Disco and rotating restaurant up top. After trip down, ice cream spot just behind the parking lot.
We hiked to the top of Cerro Otto by taking the very straight up route right beneath the lift. It is very, very sandy and washed out. We are two very active and fit individuals in our late twenties, and we hike and trek a lot (we hiked for 15 days to Everest Base Camp in November). For us, it was very difficult to make it up the route due to the sandand erosion, and it is a difficult hike. From what I understand, hiking the dirt road takes longer but is much, much easier. The views from the top were pretty of Bariloche and the lake. However, they definitely weren't the best in Bariloche. For the absolute best views, hike/take the lift up Cerro Companario. The views there are stunning!
Nice ride to the top on the cable car and then a lovely walk through quiet woods to the view point at Habsbuerga
