Tombul Mosque (the real name is actually Sherif Halil Pasha mosque) is the most significant and the biggest on the Balkan Peninsula, outside Turkey. Tombul is the nickname it is widely known as and it comes from the shape of its dome and it means: chubby, fat. The mosque has interesting exterior and architecture, and impressive interior and murals. It is very possible that you won't be allowed inside but only the courtyard, but this depends. There have been renovation works for a long time, there is still staging around it.It is definitely worth a visit even if you have visited the more spectacular mosques in Turkey or other Muslim country.

If you want to stop in Shumen, this mosque is an top attraction to visit. I wasn't very impresed, because i couldn't enter to it, only in the yard I had acces. It is under renovation. It's big for Bulgaria, but in Turkey, this will go unnoticed!

Very large mosque, interesting to see! It is the largest in Bulgaria and hard to believe it is 250 years old already.

The only place we stopped in Shumen was the Sherif Halili Pasha Mosque. It was a very meaningful stop indeed. We arrived just as the call for prayers was going out and men and young boys were entering. We weren't sure if we should go in, but a young gentleman standing near the entrance went to get us an English information booklet and encouraged us to enter. It was a wonderful experience. The interior of the mosque is beautiful. They are in a long process of restoration, but in the meantime, the activity of the mosque is constant. When we went into the outer courtyard, students were there playing pingpong and some women were doing needlework. We are very happy that we were able to visit this very lovely building.

This mosque is one of the most beautiful I've seen in Bulgaria, and it's definitely worth stopping by if you are in Shumen.

It has been under renovation for years. Within the yard where ablution place (Şadırvan) is there was a man without legs making his own designed wooden spoons.

The Tombul Mosque (Sherif Halil Pasha Mosque) is under renovation now (inside and outiside), but still worth paying a visit. The entrance fee is 4 Leva, but the beauty of this mosque is masked by the renovation, even if you can feel the historical and religious importance of it. The mosque can be visited everyday between 9-18. There is also a souvenir shop at the entrance.
