Indeed, Sofia Synagogue is one of the most amazing places in Europe. Not only the architecture, not only the religious silence and stand, but also the location and history can change your feelings to Bulgaria at all. The Synagogue stands at the very centre of Sofia, neighbouring a mosque, Orthodox Cathedral and Catholic Church, fact you can meet even in multi religious cities like Jerusalem or others. It has been build more than 100 years, but recently entirely renovated and not only serves the religious jews in the country, but also attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Strongly recommended to visit:)
Unfortunately, I was only able to visit the Synagogue from the outside as it was Saturday. It is truly a beautiful landmark!
Bulgaria used to have a large Jewish community and this is the largest synagogue. There is also a wonderful museum staffed by an excellent curator who will tell you all about Bulgarian Jews if you let her.
I visit a synagogue on every buisness trip ,and i find it gives me a chance to reflect ,i have to say i found this synagogue very nice mi had a young man i perfect english tell me about the history of it ,
I was really curious to visit, as I had read it's one of the larges Sephardic synagogues in Europe. Indeed, on the outside, it looks quite impressive, but I'm afraid that was everything we got to see, as it was closed on the 1st of January. If you're really keen on visiting, perhaps you should before.
It is one of the nices synagogue in Europe. it is open mon-fri. 10-17 closed on sun.It stays near the center of Sofia
Very beautiful sepharadic synagogue, located right next to the Central Market Hall called,, Halite The is located right next to the Central Market Hall , bulgarian people called ,,Halite'' The Sofia sinagogue was built 1905 .Highly recommended
The Synagogue is one of the most impressive I have seen. Highly recommended. You can find it behind the central market.
A wonderful synagogue right in the centre of Sofia in the area of the multicultural religious buildings. Artistically great and culturally very interesting. Don't miss it for any reason!
Open from Mon-Fri 10-4 p,m for Visitors. Make sure you are there in this window of time. Its a nice building to visit. Make sure you take advantage of the places around here to visit as well. For e.g. the Mosque, the spring water, and the shopping lane behind and get some nice souvenirs.
This Synagogue is one of the most impressive I have seen when it comes to the interior decoration. Everyone can see it from the outside. But the outside it not what is special about this Synagogue. If you want to see it from the inside, make sure you are using a guide who knows the Synagogue guards, and knows how to get you inside. If your tour or guide says they can't get you inside, look for another guide until you find someone who can get you inside.
We went there using google maps as the place was located on the 3d map when we were on Serdica metro station, it is one of the largest Jewish Chapels in Europe, with the largest chandelier in Bulgaria ( if I remember it weighs 2 tons), you have to pay entrance fees and open your bags for the police check
I've seen the renovations to this wonderful late 19th century mosque take shape over the last few years. Well worth a visit.
This is one of the most beautiful places in Sofia. As a religious studies scholar, I find this to be unique and beautiful. It is hidden near cerdika and can go un noticed unless you ask! It is one of the most beautiful synagogues in eastern Europe and it is large too! It is closed randomly so check to make sure it will be open when you're there.
Saw this beautiful synagogue only learning later that there also is a museum on the premises. Pity that we were not told when we paid the entrance to see the synagogue.
