Beautiful lagoon at the foot of a glacier with huge wind sculpted ice blocks broken from the lagoon ,the falling snow endowed a mystical beauty.

We took a guided walk with Iceland Rovers and it was beautiful. We experienced the extremes in weather conditions and found a new appreciation for the country's slogan of "If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes!" Our guide Vidar said that the colors are more vibrant and more blue in the winter - glad we came when we did. It was amazing.

We didn't hike on the glacier but we did visit an ice cave accessed from one tongue of the glacier and the intensity of the blue ice above and all around us was phenomenal. The smoothness of the ice and the waves formed in it combined with the quiet of being within the cave made for a highlight of our trip.

We went with Arcanum and the trip was great. Winter is apparently a better/longer trip but more subject to the whims of the weather. Try to get on a tour with the least amount of people possible to get the most out of it!

We went hiking on this glacier In January and it's probably my favourite thing that I did during my whole trip. It's not everyday that you go hiking on a giant block of ice. I'd definitely recommend to take the guided tour, as we saw way more than we would have seen otherwise and the guides were really knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour. Don't be stupid enough to forget your gloves like I did though, as you'll FREEZE!!

My husband and I had a rental car for our recent trip to Iceland. We spent one day exploring the south shore on our own. I have to say that I was a little confused about how to find the road to this glacier and we missed the turn the first time we went by. After leaving Reykjavik you drive quite a ways, passing through several towns, before coming to your first waterfall that is seen from the road. Then you pass the second waterfall (Skogarfoss). Not long after that, there is a single lane bridge and the turnoff (221) is immediately to the left. We missed it because we were focused on the one lane bridge and other traffic. It is an easy drive to the parking lot and an easy walk to the glacier. We were there at the end of Feb. so it was chilly and the trail was slick. There was no coffee shop or anything like that in the area. We had packed crampons (cheap from Walmart) just for this purpose. They worked perfectly!! We were able to walk easily onto the glacier and got amazing pictures with the beautiful blue colored ice. A tour group had arrived ahead of us so we had to kind of hold back and wait for them to pass through but I didn't mind because it made me feel better knowing that we were probably in a fairly safe place! After the glacier we headed towards Vik to the black sand beach (there are actually two great turnoffs for this, just look for the looped square "area of interest" symbols to know where to turn off roads the in Iceland) and then headed back to the city. It was such a great day and I enjoyed doing it on our own rather than with a tour!

we took the arcanum tour for Myrdalsjokull Glacier. unfortunately it was extremely foggy and rainy and the tour had to be delayed. We went up to the top in almost 0 visibility but was worth it. we only took the tour for the glacier and didnt do the one with the beach and DC 3 plane! would recommend taking the afternoon tour to avoid weather related problems.

Loved everything. You are surrounded by white everything and it is a magical and exciting experience. What a fabulous thing to have been able to do and if you get chance, do.

Visit the top of this Glacier using Arcanum Tours they do walking and snowmobile tours. One of the best experiences the wonderful views and the breathtakingly amazing totally exhilarating ride over a snow covered wilderness on your snowmobile is something not to be missed.Take a pre-booked tour or if driving just follow Highway 1 from Reykjavik its about 2 hour drive to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. You first see the signs for the walking tours then about 3km further the snowmobile tours can be found. There are only 3 tours a day starting from 10 am so book in advance if you can.The snowmobile tour is about 2 hours long but allow time for the briefing, getting ready and trip to the base camp in a 4 x 4 to collect the snowmobile. You can ride solo or with your partner and the machines are really easy to handle. Loads of stops for the breath taking scenery photo opportunities. Arcanum our great they supply all the kit if you haven't got it and are really safety conscious. You do need a valid driver's licence if driving the snowmobile. Its not a cheap day out about £200 for the two of us but I thought it was worth every penny as an experience I will never forget.

We made a quick stop at the "edge" of the glacier. Our guide was a bit of a downer droning on and on about global warming and the potential eruption of the nearby volcano that will destroy everything. But we ditched him and enjoyed the scenery.

That is quite the spectacle. We drove around the whole thing and it just envelopes the mountains, slowly grinding them down. You feel as if you are on a different planet for sure

We stopped here during our South Shore Adventure tour with RE and were more than pleased. I had never seen a glacier in real life and it was such an impressive and majestic site! It is definitely worth the short hike!
