I bought a day pass so I wouldn't have to worry. The second to the last stop gets you out to Vadaspark. You cant really see it, but if you see a gas station across the street where you get off, there is a small road (look for the electric towers) and you'll find the zoo. It would be nice if they decorated the road there with signs or a specific zoo color. But once you find it, it's a really large zoo. This zoo has much more than Gyo"r, but I still think Gyo"r zoo is my favorite in terms of adequate space for the right number of animals (Budapest Zoo is designed for the visitors, not the animals - Szeged is a mix). If it's spring or fall, and it's been raining, give the Americas zoo section a pass - my feet got quite wet walking along the pond to see relatively few animals. As usually, the best sites were fairly easy to get to. Allow yourself almost a full day to take in everything.
The Szeged zoo is situated in a park or forestlike environment. This makes a visit to the zoo resemble a quiet walk, perfect for a Sunday. Even though it is relatively small, the zoo holds a number of rare species which I had never seen (except for on tv), like for example the white lions and the naked molerats! Entrance fee is something around 4€, I would gladly pay double! Taxi from city center too zoo is around 3€. One negative: not a single shop was opened, so no drinks available.. Also: we waited in the reptile building for the demonstration and possibility to pet some reptiles (according to the schedule each day at 13:00 except for Monday) but nobody showed up.
I am not a zoo-fan, but since Szeged is in our neighborhood, we sometime visit this small park.I like it much more then the Budapest Zoo, what is much bigger, but crowdy and the animales live in small cages. Here I feel, that the quality of life is better, they try to make the natural circumstances for the animales.
The zoo is a great place to visit if you don't want to travel far from the city but are yearning for a little greenery. Located on the outskirts of Szeged it has many animals (zebras, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, ostriches, kangaroos, seals, monkeys, birds etc.) and is very nice place to take a stroll despite of your age. There is also a large lake located towards the back of the property where you can feed the fish.
We've visited the Zoo as a child's day activity and I have to say it was time well spent. The zoo follows the modern approach of showing animals "grouped" on continents, so you get a feeling of journey across the world. The animals usually have a decent amount of space to live, of course there are places in the world which are more generous from this respect :)I would recommend this place for anyone in Szeged, especially when traveling with kids.
