A must see in Szeged. Imposing exterior with and stunning interior. As with many religious sites make sure you are appropriately dressed. No shorts or bare shoulders. Kippah are provided for men to cover their heads.

The Synagogue is a pice of art but its value is not used in a correct manner. The only stuff member present at the Synagogue was one of the most disinterested persons I ever met. It was like she was making us a favor by letting us enter into the building.

A lovely perfectly restored Synagogue, well worth a visit. The lady at the door was a bit of a grump, but I'm sure she was just having a bad day. That aside, the place itself is beautiful, and a reminder of the sad history of this part of the world with a long list of names of all the people who lost their lives during WW2 on both sides of the entrance foyer.

Visited the Synagogue in combinaiton with a musical event we attended there. A moving place to visit when one considers what happened to so very many of those who would have worshipped there before the Holocaust. Close to city center.

The first thibg that we wanted to see in Szeged was the Synagogue. And we were not disapointed. We were not able to enter the building since it was closed for some reason. Enjoyed the view from Gutenberg ut. Amazing!

Worth the visit to see this historical Jewish Synagogue which was the center of local Jewry till the war.It is also lit up beautifully at night. A wonderful lasting memory to all the Jews that lived in this city.

This beautiful building is a testament to the Jewish heritage of the city that was lost during the war.It is a proud standing structure with unbelievably intricate stone work. The local main church was built shortly afterwards and looks Getty similar but slightly higher so as to compete with the Synagogue structure. The

If you think about its history, only sad thing come to your mind. The building is impressive and amazing. It's like the past coming to life again. Last time we were visiting, someone played on the organ and it was so beautiful I could have listened to it all day long. Opening hours are a bit tricky but if you visit in the early afternoon it should be open. It's also not very hard to find although it's a bit hidden on a small street in Szeged - use a map!

Szeged 1STANDING IN FRONT OF SZEGED SYNAGOGUEBy Zoran SlavicBy some coincidence, before traveling to Hungary I looked photography formerBecskerek synagogue, destroyed in the war. On that occasion, he said to me by a friendI'll see in the coming days for at least two full, not destroyed synagogues, that this looks very much like Zrenjanin Synagogue, the first in Subotica, while the other will be able to visit in Szeged. And it was so. One in Subotica I have seen and described. Now I'm standing in front of the one that was built in Szeged. This facility seems powerful but also very measured. Suggests more than it emphasises power and religious belief. Previous Synagogues, one with pictures in Zrenjanin, Subotica and even, acting modestly, but in a style reminiscent of this Szeged Jewish prayer house. The Szeged Synagogue is a 1907 building designed by the Jewish Hungarian architect Lipót Baumhorn, Whose work is considered to contain the finest examples of the unique fin de siecle Hungarian blend of Art Nouveau and historicist styles sometimes known as Magyar style. The building's interior, with its 48.5 meter tall dome ceiling, draws on multiple historical styles to produce its overall Art Nouveau / Moorish Revival style. The rib-like wall above the body has Gothic origins, while the columns supporting the galleries are Roman. The interior of the great dome, and all of the building's stained glass, are the work of the artist Miksa Roth. The design of the Torah Ark alludes to the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Solomon by using sittimwood from the banks of Nile, the wood called for in the building of the Temple of Solomon in 1 Kings. The hinges are in the shape of the hyssop plant, a plant used in the ancient Temple service. The design of the Ark Torah alludes to the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Solomon by using sittimwood from the banks of Nile, called for the wood in the building of the Temple of King Solomon. The hinges are in the shape of the hyssop plant, a plant used in the ancient Temple service - that was the story, sorry, almost in the same breath, he told the host of this church in Szeged. This city closes at Subotica, for centuries, willingly and unwillingly, bound in history, geography, politics, art and cooking our own, Pannonian and Vojvodina, space. Here and there are people who have similar customs, land and sky. We were jointly Turkish and devastation, the Austro-Hungarian history, the fate of the Eastern European communist. Sometimes is Central Europe was entering in this common lobby Balkans over the bridge over The Tisza, near Szeged. Even when Vojvodina was part of the Empire. In the triangle of Timisoara, Szeged, Big Bečkerek, through history and Pannonia place a substantial portion of Central European economic and artistic activities. From Szeged's here and the founder of photography in this area, Istvan Oldal. Djura Jaksic went there in junior high school. Laza Kostic its Drama Pera also Segedinac sought in this city. All this, and many other thought, went through my head again and again until I came into this city of 160,000 inhabitants, with primary urban and architectural baroque setting, and visual modernist interventions in the overall architecture and physiognomy.of my numerous, it could be ancient, meeting with Szeged, this city has long traveled in Europe. And by far the farewell living with the legacy of socialised, that exists in many more Hungarian small towns.

Impressive building, over a 100 years old. Just a site, not active.Thru 1944 tens of thousands of Jews lived in Szeged untill sent to the death camps with the eager assistance of the Hungarian Nazis.Now-a-days less than 200 Jews in Szeged.

the interesting thing about this synagogue is that it incorporates distinctly Hungarian features in its interior design. Some would mistake it for Moorish influence when in fact it is Central Asian influences that are not to be found in the large Synagogues in Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic. This suggests that Hungarian Jewry at the turn of the century attempted to create a more local atmosphere by incorporating uniquely Magyar influences in their house of worship.
