It was so interesting to learn that first off, there were more than one cleopatra in antiquity. I was amazing to see a structure still standing some 6 millennia ago.
Our guide informed us that Cleopatra is a Greek name 'Cleo' = joy and 'patra' = father. This is the only house on the island where the residents can be identified as they had statues built of themselves and their names inscribed so that all the passers-by could see how wealthy and beautiful they were. There is so much history on the island of Delos and a guided tour is the best way of absorbing it all. The guided tour leaves Mykonos town at 10:30am and you are able to return on the 1:30pm or 3:30pm boat. A must do!
Cleopatra was no an uncommon name. That she lived here is documented on the statue. Visit here and the other columns that mark the homes of the wealthier resident.s
An impressive remains of a house that is best remembered for the remains of the exquisite statues of the former owners that stand. This is not the the dwelling of the more famous Cleopatra of history but it is a very credible example of life in DELOS.
One of the highlights of the residential side of the ruins. Definitely worth a photo-op or two, at the very least!
This particularly beautiful house is the only one on Delos whose owners are known. The two erected statues of themselves in the entry of their home with inscriptions identifying them as Cleopatra and her husband Disocurides. They were wealthy Athenians from the Demos of Myrrinous in Attica. The original statues are in the museum on Delos; copies can be seen in the house. The house is approached from a narrow alleyway leading from the main road to the theater district. The view of the harbor is splendid from this part of Delos. I guess it's all about location, location, location. If you make it to this house, make sure you look next door at a very pretty house with two-tone blue and white marble columns that supported the peristyle.Unfortunately, the late morning sun back-lit most of the shots I took of this house, so none came out bright enough to publish. I've attached a shot of the two-toned columns next door.
When our cruise ship anchored at Mykonos, we particularly wanted to see the ruins at Delos. The only way to do that was the ship’s tour, since we anchored at 2:30 PM and the public excursion boats only go to Delos in the morning. The tour turned out to be excellent. Delos was the site of a bustling center of religion and trade. The house of Cleopatra and Dioscurides was a highlight, because this rich merchant couple had statues of themselves erected in the courtyard of their house, which you can still see today. (No, not the Cleopatra who was queen of Egypt; apparently it was a common Greek woman's name.)This tour is probably only for the serious history or archaeology buff, but was very interesting. Contrary to what I’d read in guidebooks, there is a shop on Delos where refreshments can be purchased and restrooms utilized.
