The museum guide was so pleased to see our large group descend on this lovely little museum even though it was close to the end of the day. We had an informative guided tour (recommended) about the history of the marathon in both ancient and modern times. Even the teenagers enjoyed it!
The staff here are very proud of their museum. We stopped in because we actually needed information on how to get to the battlefield. They encouraged us to stay and watch a film they had that tied the battle and the sports event together. Very nice!
Marathonas its basically far away from everything you would like to see in Greece but if you are in the area this is one of the few things to see here. This museum would tell you the history of Marathon run and how important was for the Athens history. The museum was interesting to see with some videos and statues but still I don't if it worth the day trip from Athens. I was around, so for me it wasn't a hassle to go. But if you consider to arrange a day trip to come here it would be a mistake in my opinion. Besides this museum and the Archaeological museum, there is not much to see. Its far away and in some sense, a little abandoned. The good thing is that you would not encounter touristic crowds and the entrance tickets are cheap.
The entrance fee was only a few Euros, this tiny museum traces the history of the Greek (and Olympic) marathons. We personally know a bunch of crazy people who regularly run marathons…..seeing this museum and tracing the history and culture of this event, now we better understand the WHYS and HOWS of this sporting event. They have an interesting film that takes about 20 minutes to watch. Right down the street, we found an excellent Taverna ("O Loulas") which had great food and service, but the menu is entirely in Greek.
I had the same private driver for the two days I was in Greece and on the first day he realized that I was a big fan of the Olympics. He knew that the following day he would be taking me out to Marathon and he found out about this little museum dedicated to the running of the marathon. With a donation from the IOC this museum has exhibits from every Olympic Marathon race since 1896. It also has a room dedicated to the most famous and successful Greek marathon runner. In a separate section of the museum it has many different exhibits to marathons that are ran throughout the world. If you are going to be in the town of Marathon to learn about the battle I suggest that you also remember this museum dedicated to the sporting event ran in honor of this battle.
