Indeed a pleasure to went at Loreley from Miehlen, Frankfurt. Just half an hour drive to go there and trust we've enjoyed a lot. It is good for a half day trip and one can get a nice view of Rhine River from the peak of Loreley. Trust, the view is stunning from the top. The Rhine has the centre of many romantic fairy stories. The story is something like: "there is a beautiful lady who sang a song of great sweetness and bound her beautiful hair around her head. Then she took a stone and threw it into the waves. Immediately the waters rose and took her from the rock and carried her below. Perhaps she went to join the man who loved her, and who had also won her heart. She was never seen again. But those who passed by may sometimes hear the lapping of the waves and a sound from the shore of Rhine River and that sad song". There is a nice restaurant, souvenir shop and wash rooms are available for the tourists. I personally found souvenir shop is a good one to get some memento and price is very reasonable. Altogether, we had an enjoyable day :)

It is not the intention of this review to deal with the myth and legend associated with the Lorelei, since that is more than adequately documented elsewhere in a multitude of articles covering that aspect. The Lorelei is probably the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge, the narrowest stretch of the river Rhine. It is a large rock or cliff face rising to some 120 metres above the river bank, and situated on a slight left-hand bend of the river when travelling in a southerly direction. This means that it can be photographed from several angles from a riverboat. A placard on the river bank bearing the Germanic spelling 'Loreley' confirms the location to tourists onboard river vessels. Immediately before sighting the rock, the mermaid statue can be seen on the same side of the river, but to anyone like myself who is short-sighted, it is quite difficult to discern without a magnification device. The obvious question on seeing the Lorelei itself is 'does the reality live up to the legend'. That is a difficult assessment to make, but my personal view is that this feature is a 'must-see' for anyone travelling near this section of the Rhine, whether by land or water. I would have been very grateful for the opportunity to disembark for a couple of hours to explore and investigate the Lorelei more closely, but the schedule of the cruise I was on unfortunately did not accommodate a stop there.

We got here fairly early in the morning and walked to see the statue followed by a walk around the top of the rock. The views from the top of the Rhine are stunning and worth the trip alone. There is a café, restaurant and visitor centre at the top, along with a tobogganing ride which we all loved.A couple of points to mention. Firstly, this is essentially a high cliff-top and whilst there are railings in most parts, there are lots of places where it is possible to slip and fall. Watch youngsters at all times. Secondly, none of the photos, mine included, do justice to the views that you will experience. It has to be seen with your own eyes!!Do not put a day aside here, as there is not a days worth of visit but a visit while exploring the greater sights of the Rhine is a must.

the statue is sitting on a peninsula in the River, the Loreley itself is a rock above the Rhine with spectacular views

Very pleasant cruising for 1.5 hours, even started off with a german beer to set us on the way.Even though it was raining the trip was informative and the views of the castles were spectacular.

Passed by this on our river cruise. Beautiful location and a nice story behind the name and meaning of the area

My husband and I drove and climbed all the way to the top. When I asked for "the lady" a man said: "Another blonde, looking for your sister?" The information hall is nothing to write home about, and the people there weren't very friendly. The hotel nearby had great coffee and deserts. We also drove to the 4-castles lookout, and that provided a better view than the top of the Lorelei. Most impressive is the boat tour that takes visitors along the bottom of the rock. The valley is very narrow there, and the sights are dramatic. If you take a cruise in spring or fall, make sure that you don't pass this area early in the morning. It is very foggy along the rivers during these seasons, and probably in winter too, and you won't see a thing. I saw the cruise ships pass from my hotel window and felt sorry for the people who had spent a whole lot of money for sights they could only admire on post cards.

It was near our hotel, we take the advantage and had wonderful photos from up. Worth to see:) You will love it

I didn't manage to find the mermaid statue - but the whole area is beautiful and worth the walk. Great picture taking spots all around the cliff. It is definitely NOT a rock but a cliff face. Still great to walk around and views of the Rhine Valley and river.

The legend of Loreley is worth a quick review before seeking her out. The statue is worth parking your vehicle and walking out to. It is a fairly large statue sat upon a large formation of rocks. Honestly, who wouldn't be distracted by a woman bathing herself on the shore of the Rhine river while attempting to navigate the turbulent waters?

Drove up to the hill for the Loreley Rock took a bit of time, there are a big parking area in front of the Loreley Tourist Information center. That is not all, it took a bit of walking to look for the rock and the statue. Most people including me thought that Loreley Rock is a rock in the middle of the river, i personally however feel that Loreley Rock means the formation of the rock for that magnificent cliff. We stopped over for a quick and light lunch up at the hill in this restaurant named Loreley Original Panorama Terrassen Biergarten. It has a good view overlooking the Rhine Valley and the River. Very good place to rest and chill out! My final question: Where is the mermaid statue? i completely missed out that statue and i believed a few others in the restaurant also searching for it.

Heinerich Heine (1799 - 1856) wrote this famous German song in 1822 describing one of Germany's most charming site on the river Rhine, a 'must visit' when visiting Germany. A short trip by boat, car or train will bring you there traveling from Koblenz to Frankfurt.

My best friend and I were on a road trip which took us down the Rhine. We stopped at the rock before we arrived at our campsite.Unfortunately, the visitor centre was closed but we went on the short walk to some view points over the Rhine from on top of the rock. So very worth it, so peaceful and beautiful.I'm not sure if the rock itself is a great picture but the view from the rock is brilliant. Definitely worth driving to for a scenic walk.Check out our trip: http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/nessandjess/3/1400659876/tpod.html

Most people imagine a rock in the middle of the river snaring sailors.....errr no ..it's just a cliff at the bend in the Rhine. That's not say it isn't impressive especially from a boat. The statue of a mermaid on the same bank is underwhelming.

The legend of the Loreley Rock is more interesting than actually seeing the rock itself. Not sure if others have missed it, because there's huge spray painting writing of 'Loreley' underneath the rock. If it wasn't for that and having it pointed out to us, we would have missed it. Looks just like another rock formation.Somehow, we completely missed seeing the mermaid statue and we weren't the only ones. Sorry, not a place I'd visit again.
