One of the most interesting parts of this attraction is its long history - and how great a job the family of owners has done preserving, reconstructing and presenting its story without being cheesy or over-the-top.The caves themselves are really interesting, and it was fascinating learning what different areas were used as throughout time - from a chimney from the pottery kiln to a trash chute in medieval times.I loved the kind older man who ran the gift shop! He was such a kind soul and his mischievous grin as he took us over to the clear floor was adorable. There are a few staircases involved in navigating the caves, so you should speak with someone on site when you arrive if you are concerned with the physical aspects of the visit. I do remember there being signs directing those with less mobility to go one way instead of the other, but it's something to be mindful of.

This recently excavated (1998) site was an Etruscan pottery. The space told it's story and included samples of the unearthed pottery. You could see the influence in the ceramic artwork still produced in Orvieto. A well set up attraction of historical interest.

Thank you so much! It was the man you mentioned who discovered the well (pozzo) thirty years ago.

Thank you for your very detailed review

Taking the tour to the underground city in plaza duomo is the better way to get to know those ancient caves. However, if you already have the Orvieto key to the city card, you might as well explore this cave and check out the privately owned collection

So very interesting that this is privately owned! Ancient artifacts and ruins abound ......a great price, too! I would recommend this to anyone visiting Orvieto!

As part of Orvieto's history, it was great to visit and learn. Very well displayed. The owner showed things that were part of the tour. At 3 euros it is not expensive, considering.

we enjoyed the real deal, actually looking at what the etruscans did so long ago. To see these relics right under the existing buildings today sure makes you mind think of all that is still to be discovered.

Loved these fascinating caves, lovingly restored, and the gift shop/coffee shop / bar at the exit is charming too, with lots of local specialities to sample!

Cute little place on the road - pretty cold inside the cave, so it is a nice thing to do to escape the heat. It was a nice little museum and it was fascinating to see the caves, the cistern, and how the Etruscans used what the city gave them, way back when. I would recommend this as a nice thing to go see while in Orvieto.

We visited this caves, it was very nice. They give you an example of how Etruskians worked and did their thing. The museum is nicely equiped and it gives good information, happily also in English (a lot of musea in Italy present the info alone in Italian language!). Very nica was also that foundings were presented beside a reconstructed example.
