Built in the 1100's this cathedral is exquisite. The marble work alone is very pretty and that's not mentioning the dozens of frescoes painted on the ceiling. You must make sure to go downstairs to St Matthews crypt. The paintings beautifully display Christ's ministry. Don't miss this!
The church and the crypt were very nice. We especially enjoyed the mosaics by the altar. We were the only ones visiting at the time. You get to the crypt by going down the stairs on the left side towards the front by the altar.
As far as beauty, this church is like every other one in Rome, for example. As far as religious significance, it's second-to-none! It holds the tomb of the Apostle and Evangelist St. Matthew (as in the Gospel of Matthew author). It also holds the tomb of Pope St. Gregory VII, widely considered to be one of the most influential popes, responsible for telling the Holy Roman Emperor to "get lost" back in 1076. It was awesome to see both of these amazing sepulchers.
We happened to visit it on the Feast Day of San Matteo, when everyone, churchgoer or not, visit it. An exceptional experience!
After all the cathedrals and churches in Rome, I felt desensitised to the beauty of yet another duomo. However, the exquisite fine mosaic work and simply stunning crypt belies belief. Very few tourists Makes the visit even more pleasant.. It's was well worth the look see.
Built over a Roman Temple that was built over a Greek Temple. The Archbishops of Salerno are buried beneath the church and it is a beautiful scavi there dating the 400 a.d.
Not many tourists when we went. It is a wonderful example of the architecture and style of the period. A good place to take a bit of time out to sit, look and ponder.
The cathedral of Salerno is one of the most ancient building in Salerno. The crypt is wonderful. there are a lot of art masterchief.
I wish we had more time to spend in this Duomo. It is unassuming from the outside but the inside is a different story. The beauty inside is so impressive. There were just a handful of people during the time that we visited this duomo. Salerno is not as famous as its neighbors like Amalfi and Capri but I really would rather stay in Salerno. There are lots of places to see in the old city of Salerno and this duomo is one of the "must visit"places.
Went by to kill some time and were very impressed with beauty of the place. Great art work and beautiful church.
The Salerno Duomo is considered the main tourist attraction in a non-touristed town. Sitting right in the middle of the historic centre of the town, the cathedral features a grand Romanesque entrance and 12th century bell tower. The star attraction is the crypt. The elaborate baroque design is considered one of the cultural and architectural treasures of Southern Italy. It is stunning and is believed to house the remains of St Matthew. The ceiling frescoes depict scenes from the Gospel of Matthew and some history of Salerno. We weren't aware before we went that the right apse of the church above the crypt contains the tomb of Pope Gregory VII, considered one of the most important popes of the Middle Ages, who died while in exile in Salerno in 1085. You can also see where some restoration has been done to the Duomo as a result of damage sustained during the World War Two campaign when the Allies landed near Salerno. You can view this beautiful crypt with virtually no one else in sight, due to the nature of Salerno not being on the average tourist's radar.
Beautiful and charming, the cript is just wonderful and well worth a visit. Easy to get to from the centre of salerno
Must-must see in Salerno and on whole Amalfi coast! This is very interesting cathedral, ancient and with perfect atmosphere. I am sure that it is the best cathedral on the whole Amalfi coast, I strongly reccommend you to come here even if it takes some time for you to drive. Be sure to visit the crypt - it is really something special, I have visited a lot of cathedrals all over the Europe and I have never seen something like this before!Strongly reccommended!
This cathedral and, especially, the beautiful crypt is one of the best churches I have seen. The only drawback is the lack of any official book/leaflet or shop in the cathedral or the nearby museum. This museum is well laid out, clean and also worth a visit. The pictures/images on the internet do not do justice to these buildings and it is only by visiting that you will see the full glory of the place.
Walking round the old part of Salerno you come across the Duomo. It is definitely worth visiting and do not miss going down to the Crypt, really lovely. The courtyard with tombs and frescoes is very interesting.
