Time to stop, reflect and pray. If you are a devotee of St.Pio, you can relive his life and his charisma. If you do not believe ...it may not be the place to go
It is the place were Padre Pio lived, & prayed. It is the place you can see everything he used & try to imagine his life. It is a journey in the life of Padre Pio well worthed if you are a devotee of the saint. If you aren't, you wouldn't go there in the first place.
When we finally came to this place we've already been to several religious places.I thought I will feel the same serene feeling but I was wrong. This place has some kind of mystery, I can feel the presence of St.Padre Pio everywhere. He's real and existent during our whole tour within His convent.I got to know St.Padre Pio up close and more personal through his clothes, vestments, letters, confessional booth, furnitures, works, etc. When we got in to that mosaic church where St.Padre Pio was buried,it was really a jaw dropping experience. The mosaic walls are beautiful, really a work of art.The surrounding is so serene even though there's a lot of pilgrims getting in the church, there's still a sense of peacefulness and serenity. One needs to experience this feeling themselves so they can understand what I meant. From this experience I became a St.Padre Pio believer and fan.Visit this place and I hope you'll feel the same awesome experience.
Walking through the aisles of the convent, seeing all the artifacts of Padre Pio's old cell, his confessional box, the letters from his spiritual children, the old choir loft where he used to go, gave me a good feeling. Even with the crowd around, I could still feel his presence in the place.
The church of Saint Pio was designed by the architect Renzo Piano. The Lower Church contains the relics of Padre Pio and was decorated with mosaics depicting the life of St. Francis on one wall and the life of St. Pio on the other together with the corridor leading to it by Fr. Marco I. Rupnik. The “lower” church and corridor leading to it were decorated with mosaics depicting the life of St. Francis on one wall and the life of St. Pio on the other. The “lower” church interior contains mosaics portraying episodes in Jesus’ life. Behind the altar is a sarcophagus made of light wood and silver, protected in a container, where St. Pio’s mortal remains are. Pilgrims line up to touch St. Pio’s sarcophagus and pray .The Upper Church features a glass window measuring 700 square meters opening out into the square and can take in 6,500 and is made up of arches of marble held together by steel cables, radiating from the wedge-shaped altar. A bronze cross and the stone altar were designed by sculptor Arnado Pomodoro.
We visited the Shrine of Padro Pia in San Giovanni in Rotondo in October. We took the public bus from Foggia about an hour's ride from the city. Pretty neat ride especially as you near the town of San Giovanni Rotondo going up the twisting roads to the top.We were surprised when we arrived at all the souvenir/tourist shops. The street that you walk up to top of the hill to the Shrine is lined with them. We toured the cathedral, climbed the stairs to the top of the hill that contains the stations of the cross and visited the new church which was very beautiful. Every way you turn are donation boxes, hundreds of them. We thought there would be more information and history on Padro Pia himself. We couldn't find any public tours available of the shrine though we did see many private tour groups. When we were in Caserta we did visit the birthplace of Padro Pia, Pietrelcina and that was far more informative of his life and his works.
religiosity of the place and the composure and devotion of all the people who go to pray. The place you visit well in a day and not get bored at all
To see so many true belivers make a very special feelings about the whole experience. If you belive it is fantastic if you are not it makes you wunder.
We have arrived to San Giovanni Rotondo and visited Cathedrals just of curiosity, not because we were too religious. we were amazed by mozaics at New Church and although we stayed in a queu and our parking time was limited we had no regrets of visiting it. Amazing !
Ci torniamo almeno 3 volte l'anno.
