Ravenna is the site of several UNESCO sites, several of them being associated with beautiful mosaic art. There is a multi-site ticket available for €9.50. This is one of the sites included in this package. The baptistery is small and can become crowded, but it is worth the visit.

Ravenna is a must visit if you want to see the amazing mosaics dating from the early Christian and Byzantine periods. Suggest you purchase a ticket to the 5 major churches and mosaics. There are an impressive set of mosaics of the apostles and the baptism of Christ. This building was thought to have started as a Roman bathhouse and converted into a baptistry in the 5th century. A must see next door is the Museo Arcivescovile which houses some beautiful mosaics too but also an amazing 6th century throne made of ivory. Beautiful but no photos allowed. We visited Ravenna in early October 2013.

So hard to describe the beauty of this piece of antiquity. Sublime! You must not miss this if you visit Ravenna.

As soon as you look up from the font to the dome you become aware of the exquisite workmanship that went into the building. Again, rather crowded but worth while making sure to see all round.

Excellent Byzantine-era mosaic, with central feature a representation of Jesus's baptism in the Jordan River. Part of the Ravenna mosaic circuit not to be missed.

I kept thinking that there was no way this would surpass the Basilica since it was so small-and while it didn't surpass, it was equal. Beautiful, intimate and other-wordly.

A nice place to pop in and enjoy Ravenna's mosaics. The best example is the baptism of Christ by S. John Bapt. Take a look to the representation of the river Jordan. It follows the same patterns as the Romans'. An old man, with a mantle. To see an even more "roman" representation, check the Arrian Battistero.

On this kind-of-honeymoon tour of Latin Europe, inc. Italy, France and Spain, We visited and revisited the most memorable places from more than 20 years of travelling I first heard of this place from a local, and it was 'only' a stop on the way to Venezia. And what a memorable one As I write this the brilliance and liveliness, the beauty and the life glowing from the artfully put-together puzzle of stones comes to life yet again. Ravenna is not well known, but worth for many things (Including a great market) but this gives one (like me) to merge in silence and solitude with this 1500 years old creation. It's a place one has to be in person, no photo or description can tell the story. And although christian, it is for everybody to experience. Really one of the top ten man made spots in Europe. I will not even dare add a photo here...incredibile!! Multo multo belissimo

Beautiful and shows important time in Christian church history. Need to get explanation elsewhere as no English is provided.

You are brought back of 16 centuries in a world you never even guessed existed... stay there for at least 10 minutes, and you'll get it!

The Neonian baptistry was also a very beautiful place to visit, with beautiful mosaics. It was also close to the center of town,

Loved Ravenna. Loved the mosaics. And loved this place. It doesn't take long to see, and the artistry is amazing--as is the fact the mosaics are in such good condition 1500 or so years after they were created.

Even if the mosaics in here are not the most wonderful in Ravenna you can still this baptistry (former roman bath if I'm not wrong) Is still a must-see

As the other great monuments that witnessed the byzantine/ early christianity era this is a mandatory stop. The legend says it was built over an ancient roman thermae.

More gorgeous mosaics to complete your set when visiting Ravenna. Small and crowded of course, but worth a visit if you have the time.
