The museum is residing in the formal Olomouc Castle and is absolutely stunning with good collection of exhibits in Treasure House, Art Gallery and the sculptures galleries. The carriage displayed in one of the room was particularly impressive and captured a lot of attention of the visitors. it was Sunday during my visit and i was entitled for the free admission to the museum(added bonus to visit in Sunday). It is located right beside the St Wenceslas Cathedral and obviously it does make sense to visit these sites together. The museum staff were very helpful despite challenges in communicating in English. I enjoyed the tour very much.
This delightful museum is staffed by charming older people, predominantly women, whose lack of English is made unimportant by their enthusiasm. An audio guide explains all the necessary information and I became completely engrossed by the age of the building, the artwork, jewels and the history.A MUST to see if you are in Olomouc!
This is more than a religious museum, although it does contain a collection of chalices, monstrances, and vestments. It's full of art work and archeological artifacts. If you're there on a hot day, you'll appreciate the air conditioning. Don't overlook the beautiful old wood floors as you're looking up at the ceilings. Other reviewers are correct, ladies who are posted throughout the museum do not speak English but try their best to be friendly and helpful. Make sure you get an audio guide when you purchase your tickets.
Not as impressive as similar museums in other places, but still worth a look if you are trekking to the Cathedral anyway, and are visiting the Museum of Modern Art as then you can buy a combo ticket. The staff are particularly friendly and helpful here, given that none of them spoke English!
It was quite an excelent trip and to see all those famous Things and go back in history. It was fantastiv.I can only recomend this museum highly...So try It....
The building itself is worth the visit, and the women who "guard" it are so proud of it. It really is worth the time. Many interesting painting (mostly Italian late Mannerist). But notice the floors, ceilings, doors. No English spoken, but it doesn't matter because there's a genuine will to communicate and great pride in this treasure.
I found this museum totally fascinating - a superb collection of religious art. The simple but beautiful wooden statues were a highlight, as were the flamboyant, jewel encrusted monstrances. Plus there was a good sequence of Old Master paintings. You could easily spend a couple of hours here without getting bored.I also enjoyed the antics of the eccentric attendants - they are obsessed with making sure you walk round the exhibits in the correct order, and you get a stern ticking off if you deviate from the plan!Worth getting the audio guide (small supplement).
One of few attractions of this kind in the Czech Republic that meets international standards. Freshly set in an attractive way, modern, interesting. Well staffed with helpful people and you can have a reasonable coffee after the tour. Definitely worth coming when you are in town.
Congratulations to Dr. Zatloukal for the transformation of this museum. The room with the medieval statues in particular is breathtaking. The museum is well laid out, the staff are helpful and there is a good bookshop.
i got the audio guide and found it very helpful. I loved the juxtaposition of the old ruins against the modern concrete. Apparently the golden coach which is the first exhibit you see was used in the film ' Amedeus' . this museum is a lovely quiet place to escape the midday heat for a few hours, the audio guide also makes it very interesting too.
I was visiting the cathedral and went for the museum as well and it was a big surprise. What a beautiful page of history in a modern assembly. This museum was obviously well planned and it was a pleasure to visit. Although you constantly feel like in a maze it actually adds to the whole experience, well worth the 50 kc.I think this modern approach is a big plus to the future of religious museums, we definitely need more places like this.
The museum has a fine if limited collection of pieces from the history of Olomouc. The reliquaries and monstrances are very beautiful, and displayed in an interesting and accessible way. They were the high point of the collection, and rivaled similar pieces in the Hapsburg royal treasury in Vienna.
The museum has excellent collection of pictures of artists from Italy and Netherlands of XIV-XVII centuries.
A really good museum and worth spending an hour or 2 in when visiting Olomouc. I'd recommend getting the audio guide as well.
An excellent way to learn about the history of the Olomouc region. The museum contains a very large coach to sculptures to archeological gems to music to a wide range of art which were collected by the Catholic archbishops over the centuries. Entry was free on Sunday (many museums in Olomouc are generally free on Sundays). Otherwise, there is a small charge. The audio guide cost 20Kc - it was worthwhile. For a city that does not receive many tourists, it was surprising to us that the museum staff all spoke reasonably good English.
