This is a huge forest of mature trees mostly oak and beech with many many trails for hikers , bikers , and horse riders . It also has many interesting traces of history - a beautiful chapel , the ruins of a German observatory from the War , distant views along a lovely grass clearing of the chateau and most especially moving the " Clearing " with the train carriage which played a pivotal role in both the first and second world wars . There is an interesting little museum there too
Well maintained footpaths, good maps at parking areas. Bike hire possible at Carrefour Royal. View down the avenue back to the palace a highlight.
There are several traffic free cycle paths through the forest which are fairly flat and ideal for family rides. The paths we rode on were surfaced with tarmac and ideal for our 6 year old. 2 of the paths start at a carpark in Pierrefond and go through the forest to Compiegne. Highly recommended if you enjoy cycling.
This is the perfect place. You can literally run forever and it's very quiet. Just remember to take with you some kind of GPS device, as it's quite easy getting lost, and then you are in real troubles
Lots of quiet walking and cycle routes throughout the forest. Autumn colours and wide vistas add to the ambience. Stunning views of the Chateau of Compiegne from Les Beaux Monts.
Lovely forest! Lots of walking, cycling and fishing to do in one of the many lakes. Check out the castles at Pierrefonds ( also a campsite for tents, caravans and camping cars) and Compiegne ( forget the inside of the castle and enjoy the gardens and tea shop!
With the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1 next year a visit to the Glade and museum was a must. The museum is well presented and has a fascinating collection of original glass slides to look at of the campaigns, and of course the replica railway carriage, plus a good display of personalities and trench art made from shell cases. There is a guide book in English 2013, toilet provision, but no cafe..machines for snacks. We had to get a taxi from the town as we had limited time but 3 people taken there and back from the Hotel de ville with a 40min wait cost only about 34 euros.
I have been visiting Compiegne for fifty-five years plus. I visit a family who were allocated me when I first went to Compiegne and have been coming back since, mostly for the family but also because I love it there. It is beautiful to walk in the forest, there is a campsite there and also horse -riding and cycling take place. I have many happy memories of the forest and shall enjoy visiting it again this year in May when I return yet again to see my French family.
Well mapped out and maintained route ways, great for an afternoon stroll or bicycle ride in peace and quiet.
Great for cycling and picnicing, the routes are fairly flat but with a few undulations for a bit of fitness. They are dedicated cycle routes not on the road.
Just bring your bike next time! A round tour Compiègne - Pierrefonds - Compiègne is a nice thing to do. Unfortunately the city of Compiègne is rather under developed, no bicycle lanes.
This is the third largest forest in France, and and is crisscrossed with trails for walking, jogging, biking and horses. On a four hour walk in late May, the wildflowers were impressive. Great place for a break from sightseeing and crowded streets. We were with French friends, who told us that maps are available, probably at the Palace but your hotel ought to know where to get one.
An area of France I knew nothing about until our visit. So close to Calais and Paris - really worth considering visiting for a weekend break. Wil defianately return.
