Much bigger than it looks from the outside, with a lot of interesting artefacts and a large variety of art, archeology, sculptures etc. Free for students (under a certain age, possibly 25, best to check!). Worth a visit if you're in the area
The main reason to visit this museum is the 3D video of the Cathedral St Lazare sculptured portico by Romanesque sculptor Gislebertus. The soundtrack is in French but the fabulous close ups of the relief sculptures are extraordinary. A highlight is the row of saved and damned souls, the latter in torment being devoured by nightmarish creatures.
The Hotel Rolin is an important historic building that is well used as a museum. The collection of Gallo-Roman artefacts is superb with really interesting sections of mosiacs recovered from the town. The medieval and renaissance works are excellent, notably a wonderful eighth century head of Christ and the Eve lintel from St Lazaire.
This museum is close to the St Lazare Cathedral, both must be seen if you visit Autun. You will have to be careful about the timing of your visits as the museum closes for lunch (I think that it closes 12.30 to 2.00).The museum is housed in an old town house with a pleasant courtyard. The museum starts with interesting Gallo-Roman artifacts and goes through to a modern art gallery. It was all well worth seeing, but what had taken us there was the sculpture of Eve by Gislebertus and that certainly did not disappoint.
Situated near the Cathedral, it was spread out over several floors and through a courtyard into other wings of the building. This included an art gallery, so lots of different things to suit everyone.
Close to the Autun Cathedral (in the centre of town) it is worth the walk to the little museum (a converted old mansion) through the little streets and get a feel of this very historical Roman town. It has historical religious artefacts (sculptures/paintings etc) from the Roman to Rennaisance times.
We wanted to see the Gislebertus Eve carving, which, along with several other works by him, is housed here. The museum is in an amazing medieval building with windy stairs and a lovely inner courtyard. There are rooms of Gallo-Roman mosaics, glassware, and some beautiful tiny bronze figures. The star of the show has pride of place on a wall with seating so you can just sit and gaze at her beauty. It is impossible to believe she was created in the 12th century, she is such a sexy vamp! A good selection of tasteful souvenirs in the shop completes the experience.
Be aware of this museum's hours, as they are only open for a short time in the morning before closing for lunch. This makes it very difficult to see the museum especially if you have limited time or arrive late in the morning. If you dont want to risk spending money on a ticket only to be booted out at lunch, consider driving to nearby Bibracte for superior Gallo-Roman site seeing. If you have flexibility to visit, you can find the museum just across the plaza from theAutun Cathedral. If you are driving, parking can be a pain in Autun. Don't be afraid to drive close to the cathedral looking for parking. There are several places not on the map. There is also a nice restaurant in the plaza, so if you get booted from the museum maybe you can siestaat the same time as the staff and return after a relaxing meal.
lovely museum well setup and very informative for us
