Just about everybody I've met in the 10 years I've been in Estonia knew someone who died in the disaster. Every sizeable town and village has an 'Estonia' ferry memorial. This one, on the closest land location to where the ship sank, is to the children who either died, were not born (there were a number of pregnant women aboard) and those who were orphaned. This is not a state funded memorial - but designed by a school-teacher and funded by the public. Stand there too long and you might have to ask if anyone has a hanky!
I worked in shipping and I remember the sinking of the Estonia so when we found ourselves here on the island we felt drawn to the memorial. It is very unusual but, when you read the thinking behind its design it all makes sense. Most people we saw seemed to stumble upon the memorial, having come to visit the lighthouse, without knowing the full story. You should go, ring the bell (once each) and reflect on the terrible loss.
A nice quiet place to remember the awfull event that took place with a typical quirky memorial a place worth visiting
Недалеко от памятника - стенд с информацией о том, что случилось с паромом на разных языках. Вечная память.
