This church is astonishing in many ways! Beautifully interior with old psintings and decorations and modernised in a really great way to give the church more ways of musical events and other cultural arrangements.
The Vårfrukyrka (Church of our Lady) is located in central Enköping on top of an esker next to a ruin from the Middle ages and the School park. The church was built in the 12th century and therewith one of the oldest churches in Sweden. In the 15th century some extensions were made to the church and in 19th century it got its current look. What makes the church so special are the wall paintings inside which were completed in the early 20th century. They are rich in details and warmly painted which gives the church a nice atmosphere. Towards the altar on the right hand side you'll see a dark patch in the ceiling. After the church was cleaned from all the soot from candle use they kept this patch in order to show what it looked like before electricity was introduced. The pipe organ's exterior is from 1789 whereas the current pipe organ itself is from 1975. There are also old Bibles and other historical items to see in the church. The church is accessible for wheelchair users too. Religious or not - this is a great historical building to visit!!PLEASE NOTE - the church is CLOSED until 1 December 2013
