We were recommended to take a day trip from Zurich to Altdorf from a Swiss friend. They said it was a typical Swiss town in the Alps with the story of Wilheim Tell. First, I had to look up the history of Wilheim Tell and I wasn't disappointed. I mean this guys sounds like my type of guy: strong, good looking, hunter and protects his family...and future country!Altdorf is really just worthy of a stop along your tour in the area. It has a couple special buildings outside of the statue and tower to climb up for a free glimpse of the area and some beautiful mountain views. I highly recommend the little bakery in the square there for a snack....everything we tried was fresh and tasty.

This picturesque monument is open to the public free of charge. Inside one can ascend the stairs to get views over the town, see the workings of the clock and read the informative panels on most of the floor levels.

If you happen to be in the vicinity of Altdorf, it is well worth the detour to visit the Wilhelm Tell Monument. Look at it from all sides, take a few photos, and then have a look round town. Not much else to see, but they do have some lovely shop signs worth photographing, and some nice little souvenir shops.

Was the William Tell a real person or just a legend?Around the world his story is told, and it all unfolds in Altdorf.Across the square from the statue is a fountain, this fountain marks the spot where the tree stood that Walter (Tell's son) was tied to. Another fountain (about a 150 mtr away heading north on Tellsgasse on the entrance to Kirchplatz) marks the spot where Tell stood to shoot his crossbow. There have been 4 statues from Tell over the years the present one is made of bronze and has been there since 1895.You can book a tour of the tower behind the statue, giving a nice view of the area. For more background info on William Tell, and to learn what else one can do in the area all to do with William Tell, visit the tourist uri website. uri.info/en/livinghistory/tell-a-mythA part of the story from William Tell, for those who do not know it."He took another arrow from his quiver andslipped it into his girdle. Then he quickly raised the heavycrossbow to his shoulder as muscles rippled on his brownarms. He sighted the apple on his son's head. He pulledback the bowstring. Many of the townsfolk were now ontheir knees, praying. Gessler eyed every move that Tellmade. Then, with a grim smile and almost withoutwarning, the great bowman quickly and surely squeezedthe trigger of his faithful bow. The arrow sped like aray of light. Walter suddenly felt the apple on his headtremble, split, and then fall to the ground. The nose ofthe arrow buried itself in the old gnarled trunk of theancient linden tree. A great sigh of relief, like a sudden wind, passed overthe heads of the people. Then all at once cheers burstforth as the people saw that Walter was safe andunharmed. "Hurrah for the mighty Tell! Tell is our hero!"the people shouted, surging toward the bowman as hestood there, proud and erect."

The statue itself didn't strike me as being of any particular merit, but that isn't the point. People don't go for the statue itself but for what it commemorates - the apple incident, which happened on this very spot. Maybe it's best visited on a tour of various nearby places linked with William Tell: sleep at Altdorf, say, then Bürglen, a few miles outside Altdorf, where he was born and there's a Tell Museum (you can get a bus), then another bus the couple of kilometres to Fluelen, where you can get a lake steamer that'll drop you off for an hour at the Tellsplatte and Tellskapelle, then on past the Rütli meadow (not Tell, but in the same spirit) and the Schiller Rock to Brunnen, where you can get a bus or a train back to Altdorf.

Grande monumento all'eroe svizzero.
