Go to the Maritime museum first, there you will found out the great history behind this great ship!Has been all the way to Australia and so on,relly worth to see!The Pommerns ship is the last ship of it´s kind in the world!
The last windjammer in original condition. Between the wars this ship made one voyage per year to Australia bringing grain to Europe. With a crew of only 24 young sailors, half of them teenagers. The 4-masted bargue is the biggest attraction in Mariehamn.
After going through this totally restored three mast ship you can understand what they did, how they served the developing world and what caused them to disappear.
I visited the POMMERN in Mariehamn. The ship offers a tremendous overview of how life has been 100 years, ago. Great movie where the real sailors experiences are still captures from them in person. Ship nicely in shape - seems like being ready to sail! Not only technical but a wealth of human stories making life of that time just very lifly! You can just enjoy the feeling and atmosphere in the captain's cabin or read all about seamanship on the museum level.Ship entrance includes also museum entrance where cafe, WC etc is available.
The Pommern is moored next to the museum and the price includes both. They have recreated the ship very well and it gives a good idea of what it looked like and how it was run. Well worth a visit.
Really nice and informative Museumship, where everyone will have at least something to see. Lot of old photos for example, but also many items that tells about the life of a sailor.
This ship gives a good picture of the life of a sailor on one of the last sailing ships. Good displays with detailed text in four languages.
Impressing 4-mast steelbarque, part of the Maritime museum of Mariehamn Åland. You can see how the squarerigg sailors lived, as well as the officers.
This was interesting. Clidren loved. Litle bit expensive, but it worth it. I recommed to go pommern.
Really enjoyed and nice visit. Many displays and interactive stands inside the vessel. You can access, feel and touch the real life on board. Everything is in real good conditions and genuine. Make the visit during summertime with other happenings in town for best enjoy.
First I visited the ship and learnt a lot by reality itself, photos and texts. Afterwards I went to the museum due the combined ticket, and I recommend to visit both of them.
Part of the maritime museum. A well preserved tall sailing ship moored at the quay just outside the museum. Lots of info about the history of the sailing ships and what they were used for. Not much else to see in town so go and see this. Kids will love it and the museum.
The museum and ship were a fantastic experience, in the course of the afternoon I learned a lot about the history of seafaring and what it has meant for this tiny island nation. We spent over three hours there, studying the museum exhibits and visiting the ship.
This is one of the best "museums" I have visited, because it shows the real stuff just as it was. No extracts or only photos - this is the ship as it was! The nearby maritime museum and the ship kept the extended family ranging from small children to grand parents busy and interested for 4 hours. Do not miss the 20 minute movie on the Pommern ship from a voyage to Australia 1936-37 and modern interviews with people who worked on the ship - very exciting for everyone as it shows the actual ship in action. In addition the displays onboard manage to tell the sailing ship story with tools, navigation equipment, correspondence and not least pantry, cabin and the onboard equipment. The nearby maritime museum is also included in the combined ticket price - well worth the money.
It's fascinating to have a walk at this amazing ship well. The ship is located in the harbour and can be seen from the large ferries arriving to Mariehamn every day.Bring your kids with you, they will have fun there as well. And don't forget the museum just in the neighbourhood.
