Quirky and eclectic, the collection ranges from prehistoric treasures to exhibits from the steam age, via celtic crosses. There is a shelf full of objects that can be handled and a quest for children to seek and spot items
Do Not be deceived by the size of this Museum! Inside you are greeted by Friendly and Lovely Staff. There is SO MUCH to see, local history and so much more. Great for Children too. If you are visiting or just one of the locals you certainly will not be disappointed. EXCELLENT!
I pop in several times a year and have done since I was a child. My own children now go themselves 9 & 12) The staff are very nice and informative. Children are welcome (even noisy babies are not frowned upon). It's a lovely local museum with great staff and well worth a visit!
For a small museum in a medium sized town this is a real gem, plenty to see and occupy the visitor. Current exhibitions and local history in a friendly environment. Parking is easy and disabled access. Near to the High Street, parks and beach area.
First I like a visit to a museum and being my home town is of real interest to me.As well as the regular items on show, they have some special events on occasion.Staff very helpful.Important to support local facilities and would recommend if you are from Montrose / Angus you should make the effort after all part of tour local heritage.
Visited the exhibition of handicrafts, exquisite embroidery, quilting, lace and tatting by local people, beautifully presented in well lit cabinets and wall displays. The museum is one of the oldest in Scotland and was the first purpose built museum building in Scotland, holds an eclectic collection of local and national importance, documenting the history of the town and wider area, through society, education and commerce. Fascinating and well worth a couple of hours.
As well as many displays many of which encompass aspects of local heritage the museum has exhibitions of the highest possible quality and is a reflection of their very talented staff. Recently, there have been exhibitions on the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, Marquis of Montrose, 450 years of golf in Montrose and presently Adam Christie a sculpture from Shetland who spent 50 years of his life in Sunnyside.
The small museum is also a tourist information point. All the staff were very helpful. A large group of us taking shelter from the rain found the museum interesting, informative and child-friendly.
A real gem of a museum offering everything from Archaeology to Natural History and a lot on the maritime history of Montrose. Some of the exibits are really stunning - and if you like modern art there is a changing exhibition of various modern artists, when I was there some good stuff on modern sculpture in the Islands. Well worth a visit
