Got some great photos of the church and the steps and its worth climbing the steps and having a quick look round inside. Admittedly not overly exciting but a pretty place.
Worth the walk up the steps and chance to sit inside and catch your breath back and take in the interior aspects of this church very quirky very different from christian churches in UK
Small and not as impressive as some. But if you are intending to take the toboggan run which commences just a little further down the slopes then it is worth a diversion, great views from the forecourt.
The church is a short walk from the Funchal cable car and is above the 'toboggan run' which takes you part of the way back down the hill.It has excellent views from the front, so if you like scenic views, it's well worth stopping off to see. It's typically ornate in keeping with Catholicism and is the resting place of the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian empire, who was exiled to Madeira following the end of WW1. We enjoyed our short time here before taking the toboggan down the hill. Of this I will say it's expensive (30 euros) and lasts for 5 minutes, so I wouldn't bother and it only goes 1/4 of the way down- I only mention this as it doesn't seem to be listed. Walking down the hill is better as you get to see far more of old Funchal, so you can appreciate the tropical flora, wildlife and architecture.
It's a catholic church and looks like so many other catholic churches around the world - really nothing to get excited about. If you really want to go there, you should see the tomb of the last Austrian Emperor Charles I. Otherwise, go out and enjoy Monte, no need to waste time in a church like that.
We visited during the Christmas period and a service was in progress. IT is well worth taking the bus, there are three bus routes here and the return journey can be seen on the electronic sign. You could take the cable car down should you wish. This time we just looked at the crib scene at the church and of course the views, not only from the top but also from the bus. The local gardens are splendid at any time of year.
A lovely trip, we decided to get the bus there which left funchal station, it was worthwhile, when we arrived it was considerably cooler than down in Funchal so take a top with youThe cathedral is stunning, beautiful views over the city and there is a lovely little cafe at the top that you can have a nice cold beer whilst taking in the views
Beautiful traditional church with striking architecture at the top of Monty . It is accessed view about 70 steps and has a wonderful elevated view of Funchal. Pretty inside and worth a visit!
Such a delightful church, steeped in history and so lovely inside. I've been to Madeira seven times and this last vists was the first where I have visted Monte and it was not steeped in mist. This time a clear, unimpeded view of the bay from the top of the church was simply stunning. You can take the cable car if you want to spend 15 euros return, or 2 euros if you take the bus with the locals (which was my choice and simply fabulous)
Took a cable car up to this church, make sure you have change to light candles. beautiful views. The church is fabulous.
A beautiful church located near the Tropical Gardens and by the head of the toboggan run.Beautiful exterior in the traditional style of portuguese churches. Interior is bright with rich gilding.A must place to visit
A Jesuit church which has amazing architecture and adornments. From the outside it looks just like any other, but venture inside, it is well worth it, and if you want to climb the tower for great views across the city it's only a euro!
Worth the trip the church is spectacular and the views from the top are amazing worth the trip. A walk around the area is also worth it and also watching the men with the toboggans.
Church up top of a hill with some of the best views of Funchal and surrounding area. Inside it is not as impressive but well maintained well worth a few minutes
This church is quite lovely as it stands guard over the city. It is well maintained and still in use. The highlight is climbing the tower to see the spectacular view. Very narrow steps as a warning...
