The only way to visit the Cathedral is buying tickets for the Cathedral's museum. The building is impressive, and the magnificent altarpiece made our day. Definitely worth the fee (5 euro combined with Gaudi's palace).
When I went, on a weekday in late May, both the Cathedral and the Palace were closed for lunch. (There was a sign on the door of the cathedral saying that it would open at four, I think. I don't remember for the palace.) Not that it bothered me - it was good to sit in some shade outside and watch the people - especially pilgrims arriving with sticks. There's a very interesting-looking little church next to the cathedral, though, called Santa Marta, which was also closed and which I would very much have liked to see inside, but I couldn't find any sign saying when it would be open. If the bishop or the tourist office or somebody reads this, perhaps they could rectify the omission. Santa Marta is, after all, the patron saint of Astorga.
The cathedral of Astorga is not the nicest. In a corner of a little square. Has many styles. Was not opened during our Sunday morning visit.
A small city located in the north of Spain contains a treasure well worth the trip. The artiste Gaudi was a friend of the Bishop in the town. So, when the Bishop wanted a palace built for him, he called upon his friend Gaudi to design the palace. The effect speaks for itself in the photos I am uploadding with this review. We had a great time. We also took a little time to visit the medieval village just outside the city, Castrillo de los Polvazarez, so I've thrown in a couple of photos there as well.
The Cathedral is an interesting place with a mix of different styles. Most of the time it is closed but if you buy the entrance to the museum you can visit the cathedral.
It close 19:30 h . The museum is Nice place too. The city is wonderfull, the Gaudi palace is só beatiful!
During my walk of the Camino de Santiago, this Cathedral - and this town - had a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The Cathedral, tucked away in a corner of the city next to Gaudi's Palacio Episcopal, was amazing... I visited early in the morning and had it all to myself. Worth a visit, even you've seen countless others :)
There is a combo ticket for the Gaudi Building and the Cathedral/Museum. It is a good value. They are just a few feet from each other. The Cathedral is nice, but by this point you have probably seen a lot of churches. I enjoyed the Cathedral Museum also.
If you are there to see the Gaudi Residence, you should also visit the cathedral. While the cathedral has no special draw, it is a nice example of the early Gothic form in this small city.
We visited the cathedral as part of our recent trip to Astorga. It's worth a trip to see inside, but to be honest, it's never going to have the same impact as the big stars in the cathedral world of Burgos or Leon. There is a leaflet in English and this provides sufficient information for the visit. It has a several nice side chapels, although a bit too florid for my taste. The main altarpiece is a bit overdone, but the choir stalls are worth a look. The main door of the cathedral, from the outside, is fantastic, with some great carvings and you can also find excellent carvings in the interior columns. As always, I'm a big fan of the vaulted ceilings and the ones in this cathedral were just fine. There's also a cathedral museum, with the usual assortment of altar frontals, religious art and various other religious items. So, there is a lot to see for the small entrance fee and it is worth the trip while you're in Astorga.
It wasn't great but if you have the time and the euro make a visit. You'll see it from the outside if you are walking the Camino.
A well-preserved late-Gothic structure with renaissance elements, the Astorga cathedral is maybe not the biggest cathedral in Spain, but it has a spacious, harmonious interior and is well worth the time. Many side altars are built in the baroque style, but blend well into the Gothic interior.
Well worth a look inside - outside impressive; great bells! Astorga is well worth a trip off the motorway if you have time.
If you are walking the Camino, would highly recommend stopping to see the cathedral. Though not nearly as big as Leon or Burgos, it is still worth your time. Plus in the heat of the day there is no place cooler than in the cathedral.
After visiting Laon and Burgos, this Cathedral felt flat. It is impressive from different views within the city. The service we attended was ok.
