An interesting walk which is fairly easy, if it is not too hot, and there are lots of very long petrified logs to see along the way. It is great that they are protected in the national park otherwise I'm sure there would be little or none left. I could not believe the length of some of the trees. Worth doing this walk.
This trail is accessible by walking a short distance from the gift shop at the south entrance to the park. There are some incredibly long logs of petrified wood on this trail. There is also a huge amount of petrified wood and it you can hardly believe how much is there. Some of the pieces are simply incredible and must be seen to be believed. Take your time and admire the scenery and how beautiful the park is even though it doesn't have lush forests or snow capped mountains.
If you want to see the biggest, longest specimens (aside from maybe Geronimo at a stop off I-40) then this is the walk to take. Definitely worth the time.
We did the long logs loop, all total it's about 2 miles. It is a nice easy walk and you see a ton of petrified wood and some nice scenery.
Seeing fossilized logs over 100 feet long is awe inspiring. They look just like logs on a west coast beach, but they are completely infiltrated with minerals. Over the millions of years since they fell, they have broken into sections.
We walked the Long Logs Loop upon arrival. The colors in the wood were beautiful! The trail is very easy to walk and there are numerous, massive pieces to see.
The logs are more colorful than on the shorter loops. Look for the blue lizards as you walk around. The log ome is neat too
