To walk on the floors and touch the walls where our 16th President started his legal career is inspiring. If you care about history than this is a must see!
While spending a couple of night in the area, we thought we'd check out the "local" attractions in Lincoln, Illinois. We drove onto the campus of the small college in Lincoln and literally stumbled on the new Lincoln Heritage Museum housed in a building on the east edge of the campus. Upon entering my wife and I were expecting one of those small museums that was "homegrown." We were told that the museum had displays on the first floor and a "touch and feel" area on the second that would take over an hour to experience. After looking at the many well-done kiosks with a wide variety of items related to Abraham Lincoln and the period, with headed upstairs. What we found was an interesting arrangement of rooms through which visitors walk pausing to read material, touch items, listen to a narrative, and absorb the multimedia experience. We left very impressed. Though much smaller, it can hold it's own when compared with the Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. Each compliments the other providing an excellent overview of one of America's great presidents. It is worth the time of about two hours or a bit more. If a visitor leaves disappointed, then the visitor has no appreciation for museums or the history of the area and the president for which the town was named prior to his becoming president.
After seeing the Presidential Museum in Springfield, we thought that we were "Lincolned Out", but decide to go and see this place.... It was very nice with a lot of nice little touches that really added to the Lincoln Story. The museum focuses mostly on the time before the Civil War and contains many little artifacts that personalizes the story. Well worth the trip. Allow about 2 hours if you want to really look around downstairs and also see the audio visual presentations upstairs.
love this place. I was truly impressed by the exhibits. it really is a" huge jewel in a small town."
This museum, on the campus of historic Lincoln College, offers one of the best small museum experiences. Due to officially open April 26, the Museum provides several tour options based on your level and age of appropriateness. The Curator and his assistant are extremely knowledgable and cooperative. If you are making the trek to the Abraham Lincoln Library in Springfield, IL, you will want to be sure and stop here, too!
This museum, a part of Lincoln College, has already been identified as one of the TOP 30 small museums in the country. When it reopens in its new location spring 2014, it will clearly move up to a higher status. I have been privileged to have a sneak preview of the museum. The facilities are easily accessible, as is parking. The museum is a state-of-the-art hands on museum. Everything is meant to be touched! When touched, the story is told with images and stories about Lincoln's time in Illinois. Don't miss this special place!
This is a very small museum. In fact, it consists of just one room. To be fair, when our tour group visited, the museum wasn't even open; we made special arrangements to be admitted. The museum has been closed for a few months while it relocates to larger quarters. The collection boasts several items that actually belonged to Lincoln family members: a hymnbook and book of poetry that belonged to Mary Lincoln, and my favorite piece -- a small rocking chair onto the back of which Tad Lincoln had carved his name. The museum has a limited gift shop/bookstore selection -- a few books, some postcards, and some souvenirs.
The Lincoln Heritage Museum is at Lincoln College and one of the top 10 Lincoln related sites in Illinois according to Now Travel Magazine. There are artifacts relating to the Civil War and Lincoln related artifacts. There is a ballot where Lincoln casted his vote, several pieces of writing that he wrote and several of his law books. There are personal items from his family, desk tools, a rocking chair with Tad's name on it, home items, and Civil War rifles. It took us about 45 minutes to read and look at everything. There is free admission and it is open M-F 9-4 and Saturday 1-4. It is a nice collection and well worth the stop. This is a nice stop on the way to the Presidential museum/home in Springfield. This is a good addition to learn and experience. Both museums are good in their own right. The museum director is a historian who knew a lot about Lincoln and was very knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed it. The night before we ate at a place called First Wok which is also in the town of Lincoln not far from this museum. The food was excellent. Free parking at this museum as well.
Many interesting items here. We were here with our Route 66 club, and were a tiny bit rushed. Hope we get to go back sometime and look in more detail. Most adults would enjoy, not so much for kids.
Went there over a year ago but would go again. Learned a lot that I did not know about Lincoln before. Very good place to take kids, especially of Jr. High and High School age. Even Adults love this place. So very much to learn.
Skip this museum and go to the Presidential Museum you will be very happy that you did
Alot to see. You could spend hours looking at Lincoln's memorabilia ..
The lovely campus of Lincoln College hosts this excellent small museum. While currently open in the McKinstry Library on campus, the Museum is expanding into a much larger location in the newly constructed Lincoln Center.
One of the best historical museums I have ever been in. Beautiful interactive exhibits and the shows in the theater should not be missed.
This artifact based museum packs a punch. It's a small room, filled to the brim with Abraham Lincoln artifacts. It is a definite "do not miss" while traveling through Historic Lincoln, IL.
