Try and make the trip out here if you can, but plan ahead! We showed up and there was a school trip there, so the staff were all occupied. We poked our heads into the gem building and walked all through the downstairs of the home. You really could get a sense of what it must have been like for the settlers in the mid 19th century. Mr. Funk really lucked out with his spot.

It's a bit out of the way, and it makes sense to call first to be sure they're open, but the Funk Prairie Home and Gem Museum is absolutely a must see! The 19th century house is really impressive, with almost all original furnishings in place -- you get a free guided tour of the whole place from a very knowledgeable and friendly fellow. You can also tour the gem and mineral museum, which is astounding in its scope. There's also displays on the Funk Sed Company, old carriages, and lots of carved Chinese soapstone. We spent several hours and did not do it justice -- we will return -- it is worth a half day or more, or several visits. Go! This is a wonderful eclectic museum, and would be well worth paying to see -- but it is FREE! Go!

Our tour guide, Bill, was most enthusiastic as he told us all about the amazing things the Funks did during their life, starting over 100 years ago. On one hand, the house is a typical home tour. However, the stories behind the owners is what sets this tour apart from others! You can also tour the Gem house, which is filled with an extensive gem and mineral collection - which rates up there with the one that's part of the Smithsonian in Washington DC. I'll admit I was not excited about going here, but because my friends have raved about it, I decided to visit. I'm so glad I did! It really is entertaining, interesting, and educational! Oh, and it's FREE!
