lincoln home national historic site

This is a site I have visited many, many times in my life. I was born in Springfield and grew up there. I left when I attended college and ended up living permanently in Colorado. Each time I return to Lincoln's Home and to his tomb. I am and always will be in awe of both sites. These sites are so inspiring and provide an opportunity to deepen one's understanding and appreciation of history that truly exists in no other location.

This is no ordinary spot but the only house ever owned by Abraham Lincoln before he left for Washington. Make the most of your two hours (at least) at this historic site. Even the wooden sidewalks merit soulful contemplation. And the exhibits narrate his family life in pictures.

This is the third time we've been to this site, second time for the house tour. Love seeing the house. NPS staff are very knowledgeable. I did the Jr. Ranger badge this time, lots of fun. Both the movies there are very good, and they have a nice gift shop. Take some time to wander around the restored neighborhood. It is very pleasant, especially if the weather is cooperative.

This was a great park downtown. Go to the visitor center and they will get you a ticket for the guided tour. A park ranger will give you a tour of Lincoln's home in springfield with some fun stories and period information. The house is really neat and like stepping back in time. After the guided tour you can wonder around the rest of the preserved village and check out some more houses and things. Nice, free, and interesting! Can walk to here from the Presidential library and museum. Bathrooms at the visitor center. Narrow, steep Stairs within the Lincoln house.

Wow!!! What a site to see. The tour is free and worth the driv from St Lois. To be able to walk through the home of our 16 th president was an awe inspiring experience. A must see!!

National Park Service site, the house is preserved in a neighborhood of "period" buildings for a few blocks in each direction. You get the feel that "Abraham Lincoln slept here" and "walked here" and "lived here." Many of the furnishings are original pieces. The NPS guide was very knowledgeable; very nice visitors' center nearby (where you get your tour tickets) with a nice bookstore there, too.

We visited the Lincoln home on a Thursday in early March. No crowds at all. Free admission thanks to a directive from Robert Todd Lincoln. Parking is $2 an hour. You can't visit the very historic Springfield without visiting this home. Our very informative guide led us on a tour of every room in the house. Many of the furnishings belonged to the Lincolns. The tour takes about a half hour. I'm really glad we went.

Visited on 2/27/15 and signed up for the 4:00 pm tour (the last tour of the day is 4:30 pm). Pick up a free ticket at the Visitor Center and choose a tour time. Parking is inexpensive ($2 worth of quarters in the Visitor Center parking lot). While waiting for your tour time, take the time to view the free movie available in the Visitor Center... very informative. The tour itself is quite humbling and gives a lot of insight into the Lincolns and their life once Mr. Lincoln became a successful lawyer and before he was elected President. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions and also offered further information on the Lincolns and their life. Seeing the space where the Lincolns lived and being able to walk through their home is an experience that you can not get from a textbook or from pictures. I am glad we visited during a winter month as I expect this attraction is very busy during warmer months. There are also other historic homes nearby that can be visited. We did not do this as we wanted to view the film at the Visitor Center before it closed at 5 pm and it also happened to be a very cold day with temperatures in the low teens and wind.

The Lincoln home is a worthwhile visit. The first stop is the Visitor Center where you pick up a free ticket with your scheduled time to visit the home The Visitor Center has a video and also a shop along with other information. Our tour through the house was very interesting and our docent very knowledge. The house contains several pieces of furniture that actually was owned by the Lincolns. It was an amazing feeling to be standing and actually touching a hand rail that President Lincoln had stood or touched. There are also two other houses that you may enter nearby to the Lincoln home with various displays.

I could not believe that we could visit the Lincoln Home and it is an amazing place, such detail has been restored and kept in this district. Very informative information from the Park Ranger. I was in awe of who had stayed here. Just to think that the president had entertained in this room or had played with his children in that room. To see original crochet work from Mrs Lincoln on display and types of furniture they had. This gave an insight in the lives of one of the most famous americans that ever lived. There is a whole district to look at including houses with information of who lived there and Lincolns campaign wagon. This truely is a gem and would recommend to anyone goes to Springfield to pop in and have a look.

This was a very nice presentation of an important and well preserved home. Understandably busy, they run tours back to back and therefore I felt a bit rushed. If you like to take your time as I do, plan to solve this problem by going through twice! Every presentation is a bit different, and the admission is free.

This is "real" history at it's best. Combined with the Old IL State Capitol, it gives an accurate picture of where Abe lived and worked.

This 4 block area includes the home of Abraham Lincoln before he became our 16th President. The home itself does include some of the original furniture and some items that belong to the Lincolns when they lived there. The surrounding homes are original to the area and show how early Springield, IL looked.

If you are a history buff, Springfield, Illinois is the place to visit. This is the order that I would recommend to you:1. Lincoln Museum 2. Lincoln's Home3. Lincoln's TombYou may want to spend one complete day to do this adventure in the history of Abe Lincoln.

I love that the National Park Service has restored the entire streetscape to the Lincolns' time. I don't know that the Lincoln attractions in Springfield succeed in bringing the man to life, but they do succeed in providing a glimpse into the his life and times by allowing the visitor to walk Lincoln's once-familiar path between home, work, and church. Bonus: no admission charge.
