Several exhibits encompass the Morean; mine was to the glass blowing & "Hot Shop". Make sure you see the glass-blowers perform -- it is more than worth the entire visit! Two glass blowers demonstrate how a work-of-art piece is hand-made. Quite intricate and quite a show! It is also very popular so get there at least 15 minutes before each demonstration so you have a seat (you will need a seat since the demonstration is at least 1/2 hour in length). Enjoy!
For years, The Morean has stood at the heart of our artistic community. Long before I was a member (full disclosure), I was visiting on a regular basis. Frequent exhibits feature both the community and members, as well as cutting edge contemporary artists from around the world. The real focus however, is the educational programming. From camps and weekend workshops, to weeks-long courses, they cover the artistic spectrum. Not to sound like an advertisement, but they really do cover the spectrum. Taught by established, working artists, they cover all abilities and levels. Recent additions in glass work (a full hot shop), and the clay center round out the experience. Highly recommended.
I love the fact you can see the glass blowing and chat to the artists. I also liked the gift shop although I felt they could have more stock.
Go, go! We had a blast watching a hands-on demonstration of a gorgeous hand-blown bowl by a master craftsman. Sit on bleachers for about an hour to enjoy the commentary while the artist works. Gift shop is busting with beautiful unique gifts, too.
Be sure to add the Morean Art Center and especially the "Hot Spot Shop" where they actually have glass-blowing demonstrations and classes. We did this as a combo tour with the Chihuly Glass Exhibit at 400 Beach Drive - do both, you won't be disappointed!! This was the most informative and best glass blowing demonstration I've ever seen (to include Murano, Italy). Check on the times of the tours each day.
The gallery is located in the heart of an artisan area in St. Petersburg. You will see Unusual art and lots of hand blown glass that is both beautiful and yet distinctive. Well priced, too.
I liked the narration of the general manager and the fact that you could watch the glass blowers creating their art in an open air facility.
Our docent was well versed in Chihuly and made our tour entertaining. Photography is allowed and encouraged. The gift shop was quite small and didn't carry many of his pieces for purchase which surprised us. However, if you are a fan of Dale Chihuly, this is a must visit place while in St. Petersburg. Well worth the cost of admission.
The hand blown glass pieces here are striking. Reserve a spot for the glass blowing demonstration. This is a fascinating look into an original art form.
This was part of the downtown art walk on Saturday. They had a fun interactive project where you could create your own painting of yourself in a cubist style. The people were super nice.
About 35 artists call Morean home. This is not high-art, but rather passion in clay. Interesting grounds to walk with several kilns. Many (not all) of the pieces were reasonably priced and I talked with several artists who were very friendly and inviting - genuinely happy to share their craft
We traveled to St. Petersburg on our family trip to Florida. The Morean Arts Center is easily accessible with free parking. There were a number of pieces of artwork by local artisans for purchase. However, the exhibit was being changed over the day we were there...so more than half of the gallery was in boxes. There was a separate installation of middle and high school artwork by local students. It was well displayed and very interesting. Thought the space was much larger from the website. Wish we could have seen the gallery with more pieces for sale.
The art center had some interesting stuff. Paid $7 a person to watch the glass blowing, which was nothing we hadn't seen at many other places. The store was closed for inventory, which they didn't tell us until we walked over. The clay studio is closed on Mondays
Visited the Morean as part of the Chihuly exhibit. They had $5 Saturday with admission to both, which is quite the bargain. hiked from the Chihuly to the Morean, which is a bit of a treak but there are lots of shops, bars and restaurants along the way.The glass blowing demo is great. it just amazes me. People with talent like this are so lucky.Highly recommended!
What a wonderful place for artists to display and sell their art, while enjoying a stroll down beautiful St. Pete's Central Ave with it's variety of shops/restaurants. Worth seeing and bringing guests to visit with much to do surrounding the center.
