We were delighted to have seen the McClellan Gallery when visiting the Chihuly Museum. Incredible pieces of glass art on display from a number of very talented artists. What a treat, not to be missed.
St Petersburg has become a glass art destination partly as a result of the Morean Art's Chihuly Collection and partly by the one man creation of Duncan McClellan's Gallery. This art space is much much more than a gallery. The variety of glass objects is a feast for the eyes including a pair of electrically lit door handles and an active hot shop. I live about 15 miles away and have been there 3 times in the past week introducing it to friends, Each friend has been mesmerized by the space, the art and the artists.
Friends, Alan & I took a roadtrip from Fort Lauderdale to St. Petersburg to visit the Chihuly exhibit at the Morean Art Center. While in St. Petersburg, we discovered an art gallery map and identified a few places to visit while in town. The real find of the vacation was the Duncan McClellan Gallery featuring glass and other artwork by various artists, including Hiroshi Yamano. There were various sculptures, and the gallery is working on a new and expanded sculpture garden. Mary showed us around and provided us with access to more pieces by Yamano that were not on display. We recently received an email invitation from the gallery about the first glass weekend celebration in St. Petersburg, and we purchased tickets and plan to return in March.Highly recommend this gallery for the upscale selection of the artists it represents.
These folks are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! What you have done for our community is outstanding.
Although we planned our trip from Charlotte to St. Petersburg to see Duncan McClellan's master works, I was not prepared for all the beautiful glass art by so many artists. The opportunity to be in the work area was nothing short of amazing, since we had the opportunity to see glass casting before our very eyes. The artists encouraged us to come closer so we could see better. We literally hung out there about an hour watching the creation of a seahorse to add to the other sea creatures that had already been created. This was inspiring. Id love to go back when there are school age children watching just to see their faces. This is a "don't miss" attraction.
During my wife and my recent visit to St. Petersburg, my wife went on Trip Advisor to see attractions and she saw five stars given to Duncan McClellan Gallery. Very well deserved. The gallery specializes in blown glass and all pieces on display are for sale...We went on a Monday and normally the gallery is closed that day. But they had an event that had just finished so they let us in. One of their glass blowers, Jacob Stout was there and he gave us a wonderful tour of the facility. He brought us back to where they blow the glass and actually demonstrated how to do it as he made a little horse...The gallery does have demonstrations during the week and I suggest you call to see the days and time...It is well worth it and deserving of five stars.
We got there way before opening but they let us in anyways. What awesome glass blowing art. We could not believe this was all glass blown until we watched memorized at them doing it in front of us. I would like to spend a whole day just watching them create.
What a great day today! The TBE crew/teachers received a personal tour by Duncan through his wonderful gallery and discussed all of the artists' work on display and their techniques. We also designed and etched our own glassware. What a fun day! Danielle, with the gallery, was a great teacher :) I highly recommend DMG. The grounds are beautiful as well; just perfect. Looking forward to creating more masterpieces with the children at TBE for the upcoming DMG project. Thanks so much :)
I accompanied a group of seniors to the Duncan McClellan Gallery today. We had the most amazing experience. Duncan McClellan was so personable. and made everyone feel welcome. The in-depth explanations that he gave us on the glass blowing, etching and carving processes helped us to understand and appreciate the time it takes to create all the works of art. You have to experience the hot shop, Mariel demonstrated several of the techniques the artists use. Fantastic experience for everyone.
If you love modern and historic glass you will adore the Duncan McCellan Gallery in the former St. Petersburg warehouse district. His work is truly original...wish I'd bought a piece 15 years ago. His re-location here from Tampa facilitated this creation of an artists district. Oh, he lives in site. Do enjoy the outdoor sculptors and murals and blending with glass. And not how Duncan nurtures emerging glass artists in his changing exhibits. Did I forget to mention the glass blowing studio and tropical plants. Make this your anchor spot for the second saturdays art walks. park here and take the trolley to canter city locales.
To think I almost bagged this tour by our local Womens' group because of the early departure!!! I've witnessed glass-blowing in Prague and in Bermuda and was even given the opportunity to blow glass myself on a tour outside of Tokyo (not nearly as easy as it looks!!!). although each has been quite amazing, today's tour of McClellan Gallery was o.t.t.! The very likeable & informative Duncan McClellan, its 'founder', gave the 6 of us a private before-hours tour (the Gallery opens at 10 a.m.), introducing us to a couple of artists preparing for this weekend's show who in turn, enthused about their individual glass creations. We finished out at the 'hot shop' where Alexis Silk was instructing a team of four in preparation of one of the awesome angel torsos that are among her most splendid works. There our small group sat / stood, entranced, for over an hour, unwilling, any one of us, to tear ourselves away until the second wing (from its separate oven) had been secured at the shoulders, and the entire incredible piece was completed. I had never before witnessed the team-work aspect involved in creation of such magnificent pieces and came away hugely impressed at how professional, even 'joyous' this group of artists are! We were allowed to photograph the many amazing works displayed, something we each felt was almost 'too good to be true' ... I'll attach several to whet the appetite of those who haven't yet 'discovered' the McClellan Gallery. Most of us left with the intent to return with family members and friends in the near future, perhaps for the once-a-month gallery gad-about, of which McClellan, as I understand, is an active participant.
After doing a week long art tour of St Petersburg, we saw many works by Duncan McClellan. I was particularly intrigued by his pieces entitled alchemy. We finally made our way to his studio, and got to meet him in person. We also met the studio director, gallery director, and the live glass making expert. It was an awesome visit and we even picked up a beautiful representation of the alchemy series. He also features other internationally renowned artists in his studio. A must do for any admirer of fine glass work.
A great gallery to take the time for. Incredible use of glass in so many different ways. I am going back again for sure with more people. It was awesome to see the blown glass demo. An experience you never forget or stop talking about.
An awesome gallery and studio of a local artist who is internationally known! Today, he took the time to host my 5th grade art club! Gave them a tour of his gallery of beautiful glass work and had sculpter Fraser Smith there to talk and show his work. Then had a demo in his Hot Shop! The kids will never forget it and I would(and will) come back the next chance I get!
DMG recently opened their Hot Shop and give demonstrations in glass blowing and explain the process step by step. Duncan has magnificent pieces on display as well as guest artists who exhibit in his gallery for a month. If you appreciate art or are mesmerized by the magic of glass into form, this is a must see.
