I planned a trip to this museum based on the outstanding Trip Advisor reviews and I was not disappointed. The exhibit was interactive, educational, and insightful. There is a free audio tour that helps explain Dali's life and paintings as well as a fun and informative docent tour. This is a very small 2 room museum but I wish I had left myself more than 3 hours to visit. I did not want to leave! I also enjoyed my Spanish Tortilla (potato and onion omlette) at the cafe. A "must do" in the Tampa area. Entrance to the museum is $24.95 and worth every penny.
Going to a museum is not the first thing I think of when I think of Florida. And Dali ? Not a connection I make at all. However, here it is. The largest collection of Dali outside of Spain. Interesting work in an attractive building in downtown St Pete. For me it was a perfect size, not too big and overwhelming and not too small. The audio tour was very helpful. The artwork fascinating. Worth a stop not just on a rainy day, but any day.
We were especially happy that we could go on a Thursday night after five, when the cost is only $10/person. The docent was very knowledgeable and showed us things in the paintings that we would have never seen without her. I am not an art lover, but I really liked the exhibit.
One can learn quite a lot about his life and his wife. The most amazing were is masterworks (that took >1 year to make and were large). We took a docent-led tour and than happened to hear another tour -- they are all different. Maybe try two (or more)! Definitely worth a visit if your are in St. Petersburg.
Wow, we were so fortunate to experience this museum and the Salvador Dali! Thank you St. Petersburg!
Truthfully I didn't think I would like the Dali museum or the art of the famous artist either. That was before. But what happened to my wife and me is that, once inside the museum, we started to follow the docent, you know, the designated museum tour guide. The docent was wearing a hat, well, really a black high heel shoe as a hat. And really got into the spirit. As did most people on the tour. We learned a great deal and enjoyed ourselves in the process. For example, the 30 ft high murals are Spectacular. St Petersburg was not the museum of first choice. But it was the only museum that said, yes we will keep them together as a collection and display them on a permanent basis. So, my suggestion is, if you can swing the admission and parking please go see the Dali museum of St Petersburg. Oh, on a busy day maybe buy the tix online before you go.
Dali's work is very provocative and challenging. His paintings have many subtle statements within one work of art. It is a nice size. Not to small or to large a gallery. There is a nice gift shop and grill downstairs. The food was good and we ate outside under an umbrella. I enjoyed it alot!
There are paintings here that will blow your mind. Around $22 (military rate) was a bit much for admission for the size of the gallery that was open, but in my opinion the smallish size just let me admire the art for longer without feeling rushed.
very interesting to see works of art one on one. the gift shop had items for all . The building was a work of art itself. How ever parking was expensive
Neither my husband or I are great Dali fans but had to find something to fill our time before our flight home. Since TripAdvisor rated it as the number one attraction we decided to give it a try. We took the audio tour rather than the guided tour. It was veryinteresting and informative. We had a very nice lunch in the gardens and still having some time we decided to hear some of the docents talk. She was very informative and told more about Dali's life and background than the tape which focused on each individual picture. If you have the time do both. The building and gardens were beautiful. I now have an appreciation of Dali that I did not have before. Would definitely recommend a visit to the Dali Museum. There website said parking was $5 but it has been raised to $10. There is 2 hour parking on the street. We needed more than 2 hours. They have an AAA discount but you have to buy your tickets through the AAA.
