Whether your are a local or a tourist there is plenty to do at Airport Park. In the winter there are tracked cross country ski trails or you can head into the surrounding woods. Great playground for kids. Plenty of open space to fly a kite or take your dog to play.
This is a very nice park for community sports, hiking, bike path and more. The restored schoolhouse is a glimpse into the past. Hours are 1- to 2 Friday, Saturday Sunday and Monday. The playground is fun for kids. Snack bar is open when there are competitive sports and the path to the bog is always interesting.
Love this park, we live in the neighborhood and go often. We love the trails through the woods and taking the kids to the playground. In the winter they install a skating rink on the parking lot and it is lit until 10. The only down side is when there is soccer Saturday in the fall. It is impossible to get in or out of the park because of the traffic.
We basically use this park during our visits, for parking our car, and bicycle, ride towards the rail trail, and towards the causeway trail. They have very nice bathroom/facilities!
The Island Line Rail Trail is a walking/biking trail that begins at Oakledge Park in South Burlington (unbelievable sunset over Lake Champlain) that goes north all the way to Airport Park in Colchester. Walkers, hikers and bikers all seem to cohabit these trails as they wind their way along the eastern side of the lake. We only had time for two trailheads - the southernmost and northernmost. Airport Park has a beautifully maintained trail that starts along the road (inside a fence), through residential yards, woods, and eventually brings you to the causeway miles out into Lake Champlain. Beautiful place. Fairly flat terrain, well maintained, easy parking. We began early in the morning, while fog still hovered over the lake, but on the way back the fog had burned off and the view was tremendous. This is not a strenuous hike. Just a very long, very special walk. Or if you're a bit braver than I am, there are bikes available to rent at LocalMotion in Burlington.
