The Briggs is the name of the theater--intimate, good acoustics--not of the theater company (Northern Stage), which plans soon to move around the block to new facilities. As an exacting critic, I am not quite the best person to offer a recommendation, I have seen excellent productions, a few that were very disappointing, and many in between. I wish Northern Stage were less reliant on the old chestnuts, though that fare may be precisely what the local audience favors. Warning: the stairs to the theater is longand steep.Good restaurants in revitalized White River Junctions. I especially recommend Elixir, a long block away, which offers a good wine list at moderate prices, in keeping with its menu. Reservations recommended as it is very popular.
Love the repertory theater here, with Northern Stage in residence! It often attracts well-known Equity actors from NYC theater, as well as from popular TV series. It is a comfortable theater, with seats almost on three sides of the stage--I always prefer the seats to one side. For one performance, I could have almost touched the narrator--this was in a surprisingly good version of Evita. I like Northern Stage, because it produces a wide variety of shows: musicals, Shakespeare (Hamlet and Rome & Juliet), comedies (such as by Noel Coward), and more contemporary plays, (such as Red and Wit). Warning: If you are handicapped, please be sure to use the alternative entrance to the theater, rather than the main entrance, as the flight of stairs up to the Box Office will be daunting. Use the elevator at the end of the block on the left-hand side, when facing the Briggs Opera House.
Briggs Opera House has a great professional theatre group. They bring a lot of actors up from NYC and always put on an interesting show. It's a small stage and you are part of the experience-sometimes placing seating right on the stage. They have earned a great reputation for being professional and creative with a very small area to work in especially the Christmas Show. Usually shows run from Oct.-May and I would highly recommend checking the schedule if you're visiting the Upper Valley. You can get some great deals (seats as low as $10) at the last minute.
Have been a season ticket holder since 2001. Professional productions in an intimate atmosphere. Many Equity players in cast. Productions are highly professional. If you would like to see the show, I would recommend without reservation that you go.
Briggs Opera House in White River Junction is the home of Northern Stage. This local theater company brings professional quality theater to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. This is NOT 'community theater'. It's well-crafted, well staged contemporary theater in a thrust-stage venue which engages its audience. Check out their offerings and prepare for a lovely event.
Very impressed by the quality of the shows they put on. I try and make it to a couple a year and always wish I had the time for more. I was Importance of Being Ernest and Peter Pan. Both exceptional! Glad to see this year they are doing a Christmas Show!
We own a 2nd home in nearby Quechee, Vt and whenever we are up in that area, we will make it a point to get tickets for any performance put on by Northern Stage. And I promise you we have never been disappointed! On the contrary, we are always amazed at the level of talent and high quality entertainment provided by the people associated with Northern Stage. We can't wait to move up to the area permanently to become season ticket holders!!
We did not expect to find any good theater performances in the remote part of Vermont we recently visited, because there were only small villages in the nearby driving area; however, we were told at our B&B in Chester, Vermont, of Northern Stage performances in the small village of White River Junction, about one-half hour away by car. We saw Born Yesterday in the Briggs Opera House, and we had a great time, as apparently did the rest of the audience, judging by the laughs and applause. It's a small theater, but the performance certainly justified the drive. What an unexpected treat!
good seats, good price and wonderful play There is not a bad seat in the place. It was almost like being right there in the midst of everything
There are revolving events at the opera house. A beautifully restored space for theatre and the arts.
Very high quality productions at a reasonable price. All seats provide good viewing close to the stage.
Every production we have seen at the Briggs Opera House has been worth the trip to Vermont. You have the mountains, the leaf season and the Opera House.
We saw Annie and had seats on the side of the stage. The actors were absolutely amazing!! The sound is excellent in this small theater and the stage props were incredibly well done...absolutely professional! I'd recommend getting center section seats if possible as the view from the side is truly from the side! But its still worth it!
Went to see Boeing Boeing. A great show and an excellent cast. First time at the Briggs/Northern Stage- it's small (not sure how many seats) but every seat is close to the stage. A great night out.
