Having grown up on the east coast visiting Cape Cod and the Outer Banks most summers (but living in Washington DC where there is no easy beach access for a day trip or afternoon visit), I was at once excited to have such easy beach access in Cleveland, and embarrassed to refer to Lake Erie beaches as "the beach." At Mentor Headlands it does feel a bit like the beaches I grew up with. It's a big, beautiful, clean beach. Well worth a visit in the summer. A great place to relax on a summer afternoon. I like the energy better at Edgewater Park, but will take this for a more full "beach "experience.
Headlands Beach is the best and largest beach in Ohio. The sand can be a little rocky, so be prepared. There is ample parking except for absolute peak times. The food stand does miss out on a lot of potential -- it is a simple dog, fries, etc. stand. I suppose that it is limited due to it being a state park. Also, there is a large walkway at the top of the beach which is a great place to take a stroll. There are also pathways through the dunes to explore.
This is the best beach state park in Ohio . Beach has lifeguards in the summer water is the cleanest in the area
This has the potential of getting crowded, but you just need to go at the right time (mid-morning). The biggest disappointment is the sand. It feels like it has never been racked/combed. It is difficult to walk just find a spot and forget trying to walk along the lake!
We went here on December 26, 2014 with friends visiting from China, who wanted to see the lake and what a lighthouse looked like. It was unseasonably warm and a good day to walk along the shore of this natural attraction. it was quiet and peaceful as we explored the sandy dunes and looked for signs of wildlife. When we come in the summer, we don't bother with the swimming because the water may not be the cleanest. But the beach is fun and often there is a festival of some sort going on. Great place to spend a relaxing day.
This is by far one of the best beaches along Lake Erie. Very clean nice sand dunes. I like ride up on my motorcycle and taking a nice break at the state park.
Nice shady trees, sandy beach and quiet peaceful location to spend the day with the family..... just relaxing.
This is a big place a nice place to have a picnic. I am not a fan of the beach itself. It is ok to go once or twice . This is Lake Erie and the water does not get very warm and the sand is kind of dirty. I like that the location is close enough if you want to go take a walk by the water it is very pretty.
Beautiful, large beach. Well kept. Trails through dunes, lighthouse, paved walking/biking path. I had to choose a date of visit. Truth is.... I go weekly during all months of the year. It's always changing and interesting to see.
It's long, so there's lots of area to spread out. There's a nice walking/jogging trail that runs along the beach. There's picnic tables and plenty of trees for shade. Sometimes there's good waves for playing in. Very close to a family members house, so we enjoy visiting the beach when we come to see them.
spend an hour, spend a full day - there is plenty to do here at the best beach in Ohio. Located east of Cleveland about a 30 minute drive, this beach is huge, and offers trails into nature areas, a paved path for walking, huge beaches for kite flying, and great access to Lake Erie.I particularly enjoy it in the fall, when the weather is cooler, or even in winter, when the ice formations along the lake are spectacular.Enjoy!
This beach is clean and has plenty of things for small children. A playground and decent snack shack.
Are you looking for a great place to have a beautiful, beach-front picnic? You can never go wrong when the weather's nice at Headland's Beach! There are lots of trails and this is an awesome place to collect sea-glass. The park has a couple pavilions you can rent really inexpensively. The pavilions have nice, large, steel grills for you to cook with charcoal. You could have an awesome family get-together with lots of things for your guests to see and do. Consider this park for your next party.
I lived within a few miles of Lake Erie all my life and always headed to Mentor Headlands each weekend as a child, then with my friends as a teenager, now with my husband watching beautiful sunsets. The beach is clean white sand. Mentor had a beach fest the past 2 years which is fun for the family, with lots of activities like kite flying, sand castle sculpture, bands, dancers, and many food vendors. There is a paved path for walking and for pushing strollers or wheelchairs.
My wife and I spent a day on the beach. We are only an hour drive away. The beach is pure white sand. This make the sand feel very hot. My wife went searching for beach glass. I tried to find shade on the beach. Take an umbrella for shade. No coconut trees to hide under. The grounds are kept in great shape with many bathrooms through out the park. The beach and parking are free. You can call each day to find the water quality report. The water is very clear. The concession stand is ok. Near the front of the park are many fast food and quality places to eat.All in all it is a great beach for free. The beach is less than an hour from Cleveland.Get over the jokes about Cleveland. Many great places to eat In Lakewood and Cleveland. Stop by the great Zoo or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
