This plce is all about sights of plants trees & wild life. This is a place to walk & take in sights & see for yourself. You might get luckey & see a soaring Eagle sanping up a fish out of the water! just like we did.Turtles, frogs snakes snails many things of interst, just a matter of timeing & patince. The fishing can be good also time to time.Down to earth place for nature people.
but I just couldn't drive by without stopping and pulling out the binos for a few minutes. It was an unplanned stopover, and even though I didn't see anything terribly exciting it is nice to now know where this is along the birding route.
Frequently I drive past the Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area and if it is in the evening prior to sunset, I have learned that the observation platform on the north side of Route 6 is an excellent place to stop and bird watch as the sun sets. Ducks, geese, heron and Bald Eagles are common, especially in spring and early fall. I imagine early mornings are excellent and possibly even better but, unfortunately, my travels do not take me by at this time. The observation deck is ample in size as is the gravel parking lot just in front of the deck; both easily located and visible from Rt 6. I was driving by in late fall on a sunny day with my camera and while it was too late in the year for birds, I decided to stop anyways and found the autumn colors in the warm sun was still rewarding; however, I look forward to the return of the birds in spring.
The birds were abundant. Eagles, kites, herons, egrets to name a few. The dikes where you can hike could be better mowed so you can find your way. The "observation tower" is more a deck. Still, enjoyed seeing the birds.
A great place to view wildlife, especially bald eagles. On my last visit there were more than 12 of them in one area. Great place to view waterfowl and see melanistic garter snakes.
