Hackberry Flat is southeast of Frederick, OK and west of Lawton, OK, home of Ft. Sill. The nearest Texas city of any size is Wichita Falls. In mid-October, the Wildlife Management Area personnel have a monarch butterfly watch. In late August and September, the mourning doves flock to the fields to feed in the mornings and water during the late day. Not too far away from the Hackberry Flat WMA is the Wichita Wildlife area, where elk can be heard bugling and photographed. Elk Bugling Bus Tours are given starting usually around the 7th of September through the end of October. Bison, [American buffalo] can also be seen on the federal lands of the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge was originally designated by President McKinley as a forest preserve, and promoted as a game preserve in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt after a successful hunting trip to the area. An estimated eight to nine hundred elk share the land with bison, whitetail deer and Texas Longhorn cattle. A helpful website is www.friendsofthewichitas.org.
I liked the doves. When the water is back, I'll like it even more. The staff has really taken great pains to make this 7,500 acres a solid migratory bird habitat--but we need rain to fill up all these impoundments!
